“What the hell were you thinking?” Her father’s voice bursts through her door.
She should have known that he would be on her ass the moment Dremon left.
“I was thinking that my father would respect my wishes not to go to the dance with that bastard!” She turns away from the window and glares at her father.
“Why do you always have to be so damn stubborn? You are just like your mother. You know! She never gave an inch either! You are going, and that’s that!” He slams her door on his way out.
“Well, that went really well.” She rolls her eyes.
She’s lost her car and will have to deal with the driver again, and she will also have to go to that damn dance… With him…
The morning light starts to shine over the ridge, and she sighs. She may just as well get cleaned up and get ready for class. It’s going to be a long day, having to deal with the idiots at school after she lost the race.
Paging through her closet, she pulls out a black tank top and denim shorts to wear some black tights and her boots. She ties her hair into a messy bun and puts some pink lip-gloss on. She checks her bag to make sure she has all her books this time before going downstairs to breakfast.
A meal she doesn’t understand, but her father insists they have together as a family before their day starts.
***
She is sitting at the table, chewing on a piece of toast when her father walks in.
“Wow, it’s going to snow today.”
“Good morning, father.”
“Morning, daughter. I hope we aren’t going to have any more incidents like the one we had last night.”
“I can’t promise anything. I’m going to be late. Have a great day.” She jumps up to leave, but he shoves her back down onto the chair.
“You aren’t late, and we have to talk. Your attitude needs some serious adjustment if you want to finish school, young lady. Don’t you want to marry into a good family?”
“What does school have to do with marriage? And I’m way too young to think about s**t like that!”
“LANGUAGE!” He snaps the elastic on her wrist that he forces her to wear.
It’s his idea of positive reinforcement to remind her not to swear… She rolls her eyes at the idea. She thought it was going to be a long day at school, but her day just got longer.
“Arora, don’t you understand how important a good marriage is to our family. Your brother isn’t going to marry the wrong girl! He will probably get some poor girl pregnant along the way, and I need at least one of my children to one day to be able to take over.”
“Oh, and you want that person to be me? HA! I don’t believe you, father. Kozor has always been your favourite,” She looks at her watch. “And now, I’m going to be late. Excuse me.”
She gets up and walks out of the dining room, but before she leaves, she turns back.
“Have a good day, father.”
He doesn’t say anything back, and she walks to the front door where the driver is already waiting for her.
***
“I want it ready by Friday!” Dremon shouts and presses down on the red button on his phone.
Gearing back, he overtakes the car in front of them, passing it as he slams on the breaks and turns into the entrance to the university. He can’t wait to see her, but then she might not be coming to school today. That was a pretty bad accident.
He will be surprised if she can even get up this morning, but then it’s Arora Paine. That girl doesn’t stand back for anyone or anything.
When his car pulls up into his parking spot, the black city car pulls up in front of the school entrance, and he watches as the driver opens the door for her to get out. Her long black hair floats around her as the wind blows it around.
“Crazy, isn’t it?” His best friend slaps him on the back as they walk up to the entrance.
“What? The girl or what she did?” Dremon bursts out laughing and swings his arm around his friend’s shoulders.
“Dude! She was never going to beat you! I don't know why she thought she could try.”
“She was on the verge of beating me, dude. If she didn’t hit that oil puddle, she probably would have.” They laugh and walk through the door where his eyes immediately find her in front of her locker.
She is fighting with her books and a smile crosses his face.
“Feisty!” He grins and his friend slaps him across the shoulder.
“I don’t know what you see in her dude. That is a whole lot of crazy over there in a whole lot of…”
“Don’t you even dare?” He glares at Daniel.
Daniel sometimes runs his mouth, and this is not the time to do it. Dremon shoves his friend to one side and walks over to the woman he plans on marrying, and if everything goes well, it will be soon.
“Good morning, snow-white.”
“Good morning, Shrek.” She hits back before slamming her locker door shut and walking away from him.
“You realize that the princess married him, right?” He calls after her, and she just waves her hand through the air.

Why on earth is he doing this? He could have any girl. He’s had almost any girl in this damn school… In the city, and now he is chasing after her. She flops down in the back seat of the class as usual and opens her book.
“So, what’s this class about?” His silky voice appears next to her, and she looks up in amazement.
“What the hell are you doing here? Don’t you have to be somewhere else?”
“Nope, I changed class schedules.”
The professor walks in and class starts. It’s too late to move, and she’s stuck sitting there next to him throughout the entire class. Relief washes over her when it’s over, and she can get away from him, but as soon as she starts walking down the passage, he is right there again.
“You are everywhere! Why are you everywhere?” She says between clenched teeth and tries to walk faster to get away from him, but his long legs just keep up, and she can’t get away from him.
“You.”
“What?” She feels agitated and glares at him, stopping in the middle of the passage.
“We are going to the spring dance together. I thought we could spend some time together and get to know each other.”
“I don’t have any need to get to know you. Why don’t you go and spend some time with one of your floozies?” She turns around, glaring at him for a moment before storming into the lady’s bathroom.
***
When she thought today was going to be a long day, she was thinking about the other students discussing her accident, not Dremon Daemonne following her all over campus! She hangs around the bathroom and for a couple of minutes before opening the door.
That should have been long enough for him to get bored and move on.
“Feeling lighter?” His voice pops up behind her again, and she nearly jumps out of her skin.
Is that what someone feels like when you call them back from the dead? As if they’ve jumped out of their skin?
“For f@ck sakes, Dremon! What do you want?”
“I told you. I want to get to know you.”
“Why? So, I can be another notch on your belt? No thank you. I’m happy without you. I don’t need your attention. Why don’t you…” She looks around the now crowded passage and sees the most popular girl in the university who is positively drooling over Dremon.
“Why don’t you ask Melody. I’m sure she will be delighted to be seen by your side. Now leave me the hell alone!”
***
He knew catching her would be a challenge, but he never thought it would be this tough! But then all things that are worth it in this world usually require some kind of attention to detail or sacrifice even.
He didn’t change anything on his schedule, he just wanted to spend some time with her today, but she’s not budging. He will have to think of something else…
Now his reputation is in the way of saving his damn reputation, and he can’t stop thinking about her. If only he could turn away and pick up dear easy Melody, but she’s not the one he wants.

She is thankful when the driver arrives to take her home. Locking herself away in her room is the only way to avoid both her father and Dremon. When her father knocks on her door to tell her to come down to dinner, she simply shouts that she’s busy studying.
Ten minutes later, she hears the lock on her door being opened and rolls her eyes.
“He is so damn persistent! Dad! You are so damn persistent! I told you I had to…” When she turned around to talk to her father, she saw Dremon standing in the passage, leaning against the wall.
“I wish you would call me daddy.” He grins, and she feels like smacking the grin off his face.
“What the hell are you doing here and how did you get the key to my room?” She doesn’t move. She just glares at him.
“Your dad invited me to dinner and gave me the key so I could come and get you. He guessed you probably locked your door and gave me the key.”
“Of course.” She waves her arms through the air.
“Well, you can tell my dad that I’m not hungry, and I’m studying.” She’s about to close the door again when he puts his foot in the way.
“He said you would say that and that I can use any means necessary to take you downstairs.” He grins.
“You wouldn’t dare!”
Before she can say another word, he picks her up over his shoulder and carries her down the passage.
“What the hell, Dremon? Put me down!!” She screams as her head bobs up and down while he walks down the stairs and into the dining room, finally putting her down on the floor to the ecstatic laughter of her brother.
“Now that’s one way to get her to do something.”
“Father! Did you really…”
“No, of course not, but if Dremon felt it was necessary… It was probably was.” He shrugs, and she feels like kicking something!
All the men in her life seem to think they can tell her what to do! They have forgotten the power she contains inside her! The power she not only promised her father but also herself she would never use again. Or at least not until she’s got it under control.
She decides that it would just be easier to have dinner with them and sits down. Her father starts the conversation by telling her how thankful she should be that Dremon was there when she had her accident.
The mere thought makes her glare at Dremon. If her dad only knew that he was racing with her! Maybe she should tell him, but something inside her won’t let her. She sits quietly as they have dinner and talk about school while she waits for it to end.
She has an important test in the morning, and dinner is going to be the reason why she has to study through the night! She can just imagine the three of them sitting in the library smoking cigars and drinking cognac after dinner! All puffy and pompous!
“Arora!” Her father’s voice pushes through her thoughts, and she blinks feeling lost.
“What were you thinking?” Kozor grins at his sister.
“I bet you were thinking about what dress to get for the dance.” Dremon grins, and she loses her temper.
“May I please be excused.” She glares at her father with fury burning in her stomach.
“I would say you are being rude to our guest, but you are going to make things difficult tonight. I apologize for my daughter’s behaviour, Dremon.”
“No need.” Dremon waves it off as if it’s nothing, and she storms out of the room hearing them laugh as soon as she hits the stairs.
