MIA POV
I remained wide awake, curled up under the cozy blankets. I couldn't let this human discover my true nature. Inera's mournful howl echoed in my mind, the weight of our lost family heavy on us. The scent of her mate intensified her longing to go to him, to seek comfort from him. It was a natural instinct for us; he was our soul mate. However, he was a human.
"Maybe it's alright if he knows what we are, Mia. We've lost everyone. Why would the moon goddess make him our mate if we can't be with him?" Inara whimpered, her pain seeping into my being. I was at a loss, unable to comprehend why this was happening. It felt like a cruel punishment for something unknown, but the reality remained—he was forbidden. We were two different beings, despite the mate bond. He would never sense it, never feel the magnetic pull that already tugged at my heart.
"He helped us, Mia. He's not like what we've been told about humans. He didn't fear us. Perhaps he does sense us, just in a different way," my wolf reasoned in my mind. I let out a sigh, acknowledging the truth in her words. Even the briefest touch from him brought comfort. But then I shook my head, refusing to entertain such thoughts. If he were to discover my true identity, I doubted love would be reflected in his eyes. He would either fear me or use me to expose my kind, as I had been warned all my life. Humans were just as much an enemy as those who now sought me in my realm, vying to become the next ruler.
I shifted my hand to my shoulder, feeling the slow healing of the silver-inflicted wound. It was a painful reminder of the dangers that surrounded me. Closing my eyes once more, I resisted the pull of sleep. As a hint of sunlight seeped into the room, I transformed back into my wolf form just in time. The overwhelming scent of raw meat, along with the presence of my human mate, filled my senses. The shed door creaked open as he cautiously stepped inside, placing a bowl of water and food down
I was not one to eat raw meat. But Inara, with her hunger evident, licked her lips. "I'm glad you stayed," he said, his voice echoing in the empty silence of the shed. "It's lonely here, so it's nice to have company, even if it's a wolf." The man chuckled, the sound mingling with the breeze coming in as he brushed his hand through his unkempt hair. He studied me intently, his eyes filled with surprise at how much I had healed. Though he said nothing, his outstretched fist invited me to sniff him.
"I worked at a wolf rescue for many years," he finally spoke, breaking the silence. "But you're the first to stumble on my property." Understanding dawned upon me - he wasn't afraid because he knew how to handle wild wolves. Inara surprised me by standing up and approaching him. "STOP," I yelled within her, but she ignored me. She sniffed his hand and then obediently lowered her head, inviting him to pet us. Waves of pleasure washed over me as his hand made contact with our fur. But what startled me the most was when his gaze met mine, as if he could truly feel the depths of my emotions.
"Your eyes," he began, his voice trailing off. He shook his head, unable to finish his sentence. Then, he glanced at the door, a heavy sigh escaping his lips. "I have to work now. This shed can be your home for as long as you'd like. I don't mind the company, and I'll continue to bring you food." His eyes pleaded with me, as if begging me to stay. But within them, I sensed a hint of his own pain and loneliness, perhaps similar to mine. And with that, he turned and left the shed, leaving me to feast on the food and water he had provided.
After some time, the rumble of a car engine reached my ears, followed by its departure from the property. I waited for a while before cautiously venturing outside. I couldn't detect any human scents nearby, my senses focused on an old house in the distance. I approached cautiously, ensuring no one else was present. With a shift into my human form, I placed my hand on his door, relieved to find it unlocked. As I stepped inside, the overwhelming scent of him enveloped me. The small space was cluttered with old furniture, covered in a thick layer of dust. It was evident he wasn't good about cleaning. As I explored further, I noticed a pile of dirty clothing, at least contained in one spot.
Continuing my search, I sought to uncover the identity of the mysterious person, and was also longing for some proper clothing to cover my nakedness. As I explored further, my eyes landed upon a table with a stack of mail, filled with overdue notices addressed to a certain Atlas. Pronouncing the name aloud, the unfamiliar sound rolled off my tongue. I proceeded down a hallway, eventually arriving at what appeared to be his room. Drawn to a dresser, I rummaged through the oversized garments, finally discovering a shirt that offered some modest coverage. Casting a hesitant glance towards the shower, I quickly turned it on and washed myself, and then erased any evidence of my use of the shower. Exiting the house and returning to the outside world, I made my way back to the shed. There, I buried the shirt and transformed into my wolf form, granting me the ability to explore the surrounding area and gain a better understanding of my surroundings. His farmhouse stood solitary, with no other animals in sight, but a small vegetable garden caught my attention. The lingering pain of losing my family momentarily resurfaced, but I forced myself to focus on the present, finding ways to ensure my safety and survival. Seeking rest, I nestled into the shed once again, and surrendering to sleep, knowing that rest was needed for my complete healing.
_______________
Distant voices jolted me awake from my sleep, their echoes reaching my ears as I stirred. Slowly, I made my way to the entrance of the shed, peering out to see what was happening. There, not far away, stood the man I presumed to be Atlas, engaged in a heated argument with a woman. Anger radiated from her as she confronted him.
As I observed their exchange, I couldn't help but listen intently. "You can't just hide at home and not face me, Atlas. I've been trying to talk to you for days," she spoke, her voice filled with frustration.
"I have nothing to say to you," Atlas responded harshly, his words laced with disdain.
"You can't just turn your back on me, Atlas, for one small mistake." The woman, whom he called Jazz, snapped back.
"Small?" he laughed angrily. "That's exactly why I want nothing to do with you, Jazz. You think your mistake was SMALL?"
Jazz's voice lowered, almost a whisper, but in my wolf form, I caught her words. "I was drunk," she responded.
"That's not an excuse," Atlas retorted sharply. "You f****d my best friend, and not just that, you had the nerve to instantly latch onto me afterwards like it was perfectly fine. Now leave my property!"
A wicked grin spread across Jazz's face as she looked at Atlas. "I'll destroy you for humiliating me like this. You know who my father is. No one is allowed to break up with me. I'm the only one with that right," she snapped, her hand connecting with his face.
A low growl escaped Inera before I could stop her, capturing the b***h's attention. She screeched, "What the f**k, Atlas? Why are you keeping a f*****g wolf on your property?" However, she didn't wait for a response and quickly dashed towards her car, hopping in and driving away.
Instead of keeping his focus on her, Atlas turned his gaze towards me. He cautiously approached, then sat on the ground, a gesture to show he meant no harm. "Thanks for that. I really didn't want to deal with her," he said.
In that moment, I sensed the pain in his heart, knowing that Jazz had shattered it. A part of me longed to chase after her and tear her to shreds. But Inara, already infatuated with her human mate, pleaded in my head, "Don't reject him then. We can't go back home anyways." I knew well it was just her primal instincts wanting to be with him right now.
She knew well we could not hide forever. Once we had a plan, we had to get revenge for our family. We would have to seek out a mate of our choosing, one we could trust ourselves with, and one we felt was fit to be a king, not a human.
He reached his hand out, his palm flat and open, this time more trusting. I knew I shouldn't, and so did Inara, but right now, his touch was the only thing keeping me calm. The warmth of his hand against my fur helped soothe the overwhelming pain of losing all who I loved. So, for at least today, I would allow it. But come morning, I would leave.
His hand once again brushed through my fur, the sensation sending shivers through my body. "You are so unique," he murmured, his voice tinged with awe. "I have never seen a white and golden wolf. I'm afraid many will hunt something so beautiful." He sighed, his breath mingling with the scent of the nearby forrest.
"I know you won't stay here forever since you are a wild animal, but if you choose to do so, I will do my best to keep you safe," he promised. It amazed me how a human could be so kind. Inera nuzzled her head against him, her fur brushing against his skin. "Don't get too comfortable. We leave come sunrise," I warned my wolf. But she ignored me, not only nuzzling him but putting her damn head in his lap. At this pace, we may actually become his pet.
