David didn't say a word. He just nodded his head, pretending he was going to do it but didn't move from the bed.
"We will do what we can, miss." A voice from behind him spoke up. No one left their spots, everyone was still there, staring at me...
"When?" I asked impatiently.
"We need for our main head chief to come back," Theo answered this time.
"But your chief is right here, David." I pointed a finger at him as that was the only thing I could lift at this moment while trying my best to articulate the words coming out of my mouth. I heard Theo sarcastically chuckle and leaving the room, slamming the door.
"Our village has two chiefs. I take care of the administration, people relations, and so on. The other chief is in charge of security and all that. You know..."
"I don't," I didn't let David finish his sentence. The door slammed open: "Well, you should from now on." A new voice appeared in the room. I could hear Theo slightly still chuckling at the door, probably standing behind him. The people, who were standing by my bed, all turned towards the entrance. Even David turned around.
"You can leave. I have some business with her," the voice from the door continued. He didn't take any more steps inside the room, he was just standing at the door. I could see the shadow he was casting on the floor. The corridor behind him was brightly lit, unlike my room. From the shadow, it looked like he wasn't much taller than me but he was definitely well-built. The whole entourage of people at my bed obediently left the room without saying another word. Then the door closed silently and footsteps were coming close to my bed, dragging a chair on the wooden floor.
Just thinking about the chair sent shivers down my spine and made my stomach flip upside down. It sent my mind back to what happened over a day before. I closed my eyes trying to calm myself down, imagining a wide meadow in early summer with a light breeze and all kinds of flowers swinging in it.
God, I'm starving. My stomach answered my thoughts in just a split second pretty loudly.
"Hey, you good?" He asked. I slowly nodded.
"Alright, then you could at least look at me since I am talking to you," he silently roared but just enough for me to hear clearly. I turned my head towards him slowly and looked at his face. I could feel my cheeks getting hot. He wasn't just handsome. He was beautiful. I have never seen anything like him before. Not even the paintings nor statues I'd seen so far weren't created to such perfection.
"Finally," he sighed and looked into my eyes. I quickly closed them, refusing to keep looking at him, for his mysterious dark brown eyes would suck me in and wouldn't let me free. I could hear him sigh again.
"Hey, where are your manners? After I saved you?!" he made sure to stress out the last three words. Even though it was true that the village has helped me immensely and Theo saved me from getting lost in the woods, he didn't do a thing. Somehow it made the blood in my veins boil. A person that comes late, is rude and says he did all the work?!
"No, you didn't!" I snapped at him and stared directly into his eyes.
"Yeah? And how else did you get here?" He crossed his arms in front of his chest while not taking his eyes off of me. He leaned back on the chair and filled his chest with air to make him look bigger and to emit arrogance and show his upper hand.
"It is true that Theo helped me... But I wouldn't be here if the wolves didn't help me out!" I glared at him. If I could stand up and fight, I would seriously give him a punch.
"Oh, wolves?" He snickered. I froze.
Damn it, I wanted to keep this for myself or tell it to a psychiatrist! Now he'll think I'm crazy. What should I do... Tell him I hallucinated?
"Alright. No need to explain," he somehow decided not to linger on it.
So he thinks I'm crazy? Is that it?
"Anyway, how about some introductions?" His question made me snap back from my thoughts to reality for a while. I started scanning the ceiling while wondering about his name. The only thing I knew was what David had told me, that he was some sort of a chief here for security.
"My name is Gabriel. Nice to meet you, miss...?" Gabriel raised his eyebrow.
"Ariadne. Ariadne Garde,“ I answered without hesitation. He nodded his head in an -I see- motion and clasped his hands together. I watched his fingers intertwine, one by one. My hungry eyes were taking them in as if each one of them would be served for dinner for my starving stomach. His hands weren’t that big, in fact, they were quite small, probably about the same as mine.
------Gabriel’s POV------
After organizing the pack according to David’s orders I was stalking around the edge of the forest to see if James would show himself. I was trying to be as silent as possible, avoiding all branches that could snap and hiding well in the shadows.
Ariadne was already deep in the forest and the pack was there to protect her from the people. I just needed to make sure that the vampire wouldn't get to them. It would be easy for him to take her away as we didn’t want to hurt her at all.
Gabriel, we’re at her. She looks terrible. I got a message in my head.
Yeah, I know. I was the one who got her out. Theo, make sure she doesn’t get hurt and don’t scare her to death. I bet she doesn’t know a thing about us. I sent the message to everyone that was around Ariadne. I was lurking around to make sure that the freaking vampire doesn’t get close. But it didn’t seem like he was going out. The day was about to break soon too…
Gabriel, I got her. I’ll make sure to get her to the village as soon as possible. The sick guy will not show himself anytime soon as he has her brother. Theo sent me a mind link. I froze while still looking at the residence grounds. Icarus was with that sicko. That wasn’t good. We were supposed to protect both Ariadne and Icarus, as our treaty said. If we didn’t have Icarus, it would be a huge problem.
I should go get Icarus, too. Getting Ariadne out was easy enough as her scent was all over the place. But I couldn't sense Icarus' scent at all. His scent was quite faint as he is still a young kid. At the same time they managed to sneak him out in all the ruckus they were causing... If we had gotten to the spot a split hair sooner... I need to find Icarus.
As I was about to move, I got mind-linked from the Alpha: Gabriel, don’t go for Icarus. We don’t know his whereabouts. Just don’t push it. We have Ariadne. That should be enough for now. I growled. Icarus was her beloved brother. Why wouldn’t we go get him? He was as important to Ariadne as she was important to me. But Alpha’s orders were absolute. I had to listen. I turned around in my wolf form and started dashing towards the village. It was about four hours from here without taking any breaks.
……
I saw Ariadne when Theo brought her back and put her on the bed. Her bloody torn white dress, her bruised arms, and legs… I didn’t see that before when I was freeing her from the place. My knees got weak. I looked down and started feeling sick. I grasped Theo's shoulder to keep myself steady.
“Just what did he do to her…” My voice broke while whispering.
“She’ll be fine, Gabriel. Just give her time. She’s a human, she won’t heal as fast as we do,” David answered while covering her with a very thin light blanket. The doctor arrived a while ago and was getting ready to examine her body. When he touched her hands to examine them, she gasped in pain even from her deep sleep.
“At least give her some painkiller!” I looked away, gripping Theo's shoulder harder. The pain from seeing her suffering was growing bigger each second I was in the room with her, seeing how the doctor tried helping her by first making her pain worse.
“No need to worry, I will do my best. It’s not as bad as it looks. I only suspect she has a fractured rib but the rest is just on the upper layers of her body. They hurt, but they will heal in a short time.” The doctor answered while looking at me. I nodded without looking at him. I had to leave the room, otherwise, I would uncontrollably shift, feeling my soul was gone. I silently closed the door behind me and went outside. Rage in me was growing with every step I took away from the cottage at the top of the village. It was still night, the lights in the whole village were out, only the hut behind me was brimming with life. The wolf in me was roaring, screaming, growling, and whimpering. All of them at once.
I howled from the top of my lungs as the wolf came out. I yowled and ran. I ran and ran. Her suffering expression clouding my mind, filling me with rage.
