The voices were getting closer no matter how many steps I managed to take forward. I could hear the branches snapping and cracking as they were not even a hundred meters away from me. The quiet forest was long gone as so many people were searching for me in it. Blood was rushing in my ears as adrenaline took over everything. But I couldn’t move forward. I used up all my strength to get to this point. This far from the forest entrance. I have been walking for maybe two or three hours. This was it.
I sat down and leaned my back on the tree. I was exhausted. I couldn’t take a step more. My eye was closing and my whole body was throbbing with pain. The headache was splitting my head into halves, my lungs nearly giving up. The dawn was lazily breaking through the leaves and branches above me, the forest not being as dark as before anymore. I loudly exhaled. There was no way I could get away from them.
Every inhale and exhale was hurting me and stabbing me like a thousand daggers. I swear I could taste blood in my mouth. The voices were getting closer. They were shouting at each other to coordinate their movement. I shifted a bit to the side to ease the pain of my body. I groaned. I was bruised all over, my wrists were showing signs of being tied together, legs, and arms full of red and purple bruises. Who knew what was under my torn dress... I didn’t want to know.
“Where is she?!” I gasped and held my breath. That was too close. At this point I was wishing I would become one with the tree. Or invisible. Or both at once. Just disappear.
The bush not far from me rustled. I turned towards it and tried to see if there was any movement. Suddenly the branches came apart as a big wolf slowly came out of it. This time it was a different one. It looked a bit smaller, was probably a different colour as well. Hallucinations again?
“Tell me I’m hallucinating.” I smiled at it while losing it. There was no way something like this wouldn’t want to eat me. I couldn’t run, I was the perfect prey for any wolf, bear, or whatever else was lurking in these forests. The wolf sat down in front of me and was looking at me while studying my whole body with its eyes. I was going to get eaten. Right. I definitely had to look very tasty.
Suddenly, the wolf jumped up to its all fours, its fur standing up all over its body. The creature in front of me was dangerously growling. Mother of God. Hairs on my body were all standing up straight like soldiers in a line. This was scarier than what happened before. They were humans. This was an animal. Talking to it would not change anything. Yet, it was still standing there, growling, its sharp huge white fangs becoming more and more visible.
When I had thought my life was over a few seconds ago when it was just me and those guys, it was definitely over now.
Just how much luck do I have in this life?
I closed my eyes. I didn’t feel like seeing the end of my life in the huge fangs of the beast. I could hear the branches snapping not too far from me. The growls got louder. I don’t want to do this anymore. Just eat me! Get it over with! The wolf lashed out next to me. My heart was in my throat, beating like crazy. It was faint but I could hear more growls from other places as well. I kept my eyes tightly shut. Blood was rushing in my ears so loud I had a hard time hearing anything.
“Damn me! Wolves!” Some guy shouted very close. But the branches weren’t snapping around me anymore. Only growls could be heard all around.
“Okay, okay. Calm. Down. I am going. I’m leaving. Fine? Ok?” The man’s voice said as branches started cracking and snapping again as he was probably going away, as the growling was getting smaller. After a while, there was no growling anymore. Just the murmuring of my own blood remained.
I swear I was dead inside. My soul just left my body. They will now come to me and eat me. Have a feast. Because I was the one, who couldn’t move. The guy could run as much as he wanted. I was the easy prey, which couldn’t move.
I heard a low-key growl at my right ear. I yanked up while sitting. I was holding my breath as I could feel a warm breath of the wolf on my face. My eyes were still shut as I didn’t dare to open them. The wolf was still breathing heavily next to me. All of a sudden, it nuzzled its head against my arm gently.
I groaned. No matter how gently one would touch me, it still hurt. The wolf yowled lightly as if to apologize. Sun rays were falling on my face.
It had to be quite late in the morning already when I decided to slowly get up. The wolf was with me the whole time. Instead of a huge beast, it looked like a very obedient dog.
"If you're so obedient, can you find some stick I could use for walking?" As crazy as it sounded, I talked to a wolf. People do talk to themselves, they talk to their pets at home hoping they would understand what they mean... But a wild wolf? A wolf? There was no way I would be talking about this to anyone in the future unless that person was a psychiatrist.
Much to my surprise, the wolf got up. Maybe it was leaving. It disappeared in the bushes, from where it came before.
"Alright, just go. Not like you can be of any help to me for now." I sighed in disbelief. Why would I even try talking to that animal?
They say that animals are not as smart as people. I would say I am the stupid one here. Thinking it would actually understand me. Instead, it just decided to go away. Now, where am I supposed to go, anyway? This is my first time being this deep in this forest.
I looked around. Trees. Nothing else but trees. No paths, just an endless amount of trees.
"Trees everywhere!" I complained to the air as if swearing to the sky and whoever dwelled in it.
The bushes in front of me rustled.
A bird probably... I didn't pay attention to it, as I was still trying to figure out, how to get out of here.
"And what do you expect in a forest? Highway?" My body stiffened. That wasn't my voice. That was some male's voice coming from exactly… the bushes! I turned my shocked gaze towards it to see a young guy standing right at the entrance to the green branches. Half naked at that too.
I screamed.
"p*****t!" I shouted and wanted to run, but my body didn't budge.
"Here, let me help you..." He started coming closer as he saw that I couldn't move.
"Nonono, you stay there, where you are." I lifted my finger as my whole arm was too sore and in pain to stop him.
"And who's gonna stop me? Your finger?" He was standing not too far from me, gazing at me..
"If I had a stick..." I mumbled to myself.
"You mean this one?" He threw a sturdy long stick to my feet.
He couldn't hear that. Even I wouldn't be able to hear it from about ten meters. Just how good is his hearing?
"Thanks." I picked it up slowly. Each bent vertebra was causing me immense pain, not even mentioning my abdomen. My solar plexus had a couple of intense dates with James’ soles.
"Whoa, no need to point it at me, sweetie. I'm here to help." The guy put his hands up next to his head to show that he meant no harm. "But if I were you, I would let myself be carried. It would hurt less and would also be faster. Where do you want to go with your arms and legs looking like that?" He pointed out how my limbs looked.
"Anywhere that is far away from James for now," I answered.
"Good choice. Let me be your guide then, miss." He comically bowed.
"Do I look like a clown to you?" I puckered my brows a bit, more wasn't possible as my face was still swollen and hurting.
"Well... If you have a proper look at yourself..." He paused and scanned my body again. I did the same to his. He was wearing khaki shorts with many pockets on them, sturdy boots, and no T-shirt. His abs and breasts were way too visible. I swear I could stick a candle between them and it wouldn't move an inch. It would probably melt from the hotness.
