JASON.
I had been on the phone all morning since Sam had mind linked to check that I knew about the young woman who had arrived in Lakeside earlier. Which I did not. I had told him I needed more information. Apparently, some woman had shown up this morning with a car full of stuff and property deeds, claiming to be moving to a house here. Who the f**k does she think she is? I am the f*****g Alpha. No-one moves to Lakeside without my f*****g say so and I definitely didn’t say so. I was already annoyed that someone had , had the cheek to bypass me in my own f*****g pack, but i was getting more irritated as the day went on.I had been ringing around other packs to see if anyone had them recently, but had no luck. I had told them someone had just randomly shown up, looking for refuge, and that I was checking into their story. I couldn’t very well have the other Alpha’s thinking I didn’t know what was happening in my own pack.
I was no closer to finding g out who this woman was. Sam hadn’t remembered the name of the property, but he was fairly sure it was a flower. I would have to have a little chat with him about paying more attention to details. I sent him a message over mindlink to come and see me once the wolf I sent to relieve him arrived. I had one more pack to try calling, I had deliberatel left the Moon River pack until last. I had hoped I wouldn’t have to call them.
I dialled the number and waited as it rang. “Hello, Moon River, Beta Edwards speaking.” I sucked it up and asked about the girl. “Can’t help you I’m afraid Alpha Stone. We haven’t had a pack member leave for over 30 years. However, if this young woman needs help, and you don't feel able to give it, then feel free to send her our way. I’m sure we have space for her.” I clenched my fist at his patronising tone. It was unheard of for a beta to talk to an Alpha this way, but I had always had trouble with Moon River. They were the biggest pack in the country. Their Alpha, Gareth Baxter, was feared and respected in equal measures. Moon River had always looked down on me because of the way I had become Alpha. My father was the Beta, but he had stepped up and became Alpha of Lakeside after Alpha and Luna rivers were murdered. He had passed the Alpha position to me two years ago. I had worked hard to prove myself and had earned a reputation for being a smart, ruthless Alpha. Yet Alpha Baxter liked to remind me that I was of Beta blood at any opportunity. I informed Beta Edwards that their assistance wasn’t wanted, through gritted teeth, and hung up.
The door to my office knocked, and I called for Sam to enter. He looked sheepish as he sat in the chair I gestured to. “Sam, I need to talk to you about this morning.” I began my voice stern. “I am disappointed that you didn’t think that the address this woman apparently owns was important enough to take notice of.” I had emphasised the work disappointed, so he knew what I actually meant was that I was pissed off. He bowed his head “I’m so sorry, Alpha, I was distracted by her scent and clearly wasn’t thinking.” I stopped him “Why were you distracted by her scent? She’s not your mate, is she?” I asked. The scent of a werewolves mate can affect their emotions. It has a calming effect, but when you smell it for the first time, it can send your senses into overdrive and get your wolf all riled up. “No Alpha, it was just that I found her scent confusing. She didn’t smell like a werewolf, but she didn’t smell completely human either. In fact, she didn’t smell like anything I know of.” I rubbed my temples in frustration at this information. “Sam, had you told me this earlier then I wouldn’t have wasted my time phoning around other f*****g packs.” I stared across at him “Is there anything else you neglected to tell me, anything at all?” Sam thought for a minute before saying “ Well I don’t know if it matters but Rufus seemed to be happy about her presence.” I raised an eyebrow at this Rufus was Sam’s wolf. Why would this woman have any effect on Rufus? I dismissed Sam and decided I had better go and try to find this mystery woman for myself.
