CHAPTER EIGHT: THE ROAD TO LAKESIDE.

CHRIS. I had stayed away to give Amber some space. I hoped she would have started to miss me by now. I tried to talk to her at Mary’s funeral, but she was busy. I decided to go over to her house later and see her. When I got there, the house was in darkness, locked up tight. There was a to let sign out the front. I felt a surge of hope. Maybe this meant she had gone back to mine. I rushed home, imagining Amber there waiting for me. I started bargaining “Goddess, let here be there, let her forgive me and I swear I will never touch Kim again” I felt like an i***t and a arse after letting myself get seduced by her again the other night, but I had to admit I had enjoyed every second of it. It was a memory that I would revisit when I was alone and horny, but I wouldn’t let myself go there again with Kim. I arrived at my house at threw the door open hopefully “Amber, babe, are you here?” I called out but was met with silence . Clearly, she wasn’t here. I shut the door exclaimed out loud to the Goddess “well thanks for nothing”. I slumped on the sofa, realising what this meant. If she’s not there and she’s not here, then she’s gone. AMBER. I’ve been driving since I left. I only stopped once to fill up the tank and use the toilet. I don’t think I’m far from Lakeside now, but it’s dark, and I’m struggling to keep my eyes open. I was on a wide road surrounded by wood. I figured that it would be safer to pull over and get some sleep than to risk continuing tonight. Besides, I didn’t know my way around Lakeside, so it would be better to arrive in the morning when I could ask someone for directions. I got out the pillow and blanket that I had put in a bag on the passenger seat just in case I needed them. I turned on my battery-powered lantern and placed it on the dashboard. I hadn’t seen any other vehicles for a while, but it's better to be safe than sorry. This way, if a car does come by, they will be able to see me. I don’t want to get crashed into. I snuggled down and was just dropping off when. I heard the sound of wolves howling in the distance. I found it comforting somehow, and it wasn’t long before sleep claimed me. I could still hear the howling in my dreams, but it seemed much closer. I was in the woods, running. but I wasn’t scared. I could feel the wind in my hair and the ground beneath my feet. I came to a stop to see a big black and white wolf standing in front of me. It was bigger than any wolf I had ever seen before. I looked closer and saw that it had two different coloured eyes, one was pale, icy blue and the other was a deep navy. I wasn’t sure if I should be afraid or not. I was woken from my dream by a truck passing by. It was getting light out now. I turned off the lantern and stepped outside to stretch my legs. I looked around for a bush, my bladder needed emptying badly. When I was done, I got back on the road. About thirty minutes later, I came across a sign signalling that I had arrived at Lakeside. The road was much narrower now. Trees still lined both sides. It looked peaceful out here. It felt a million miles from the busy roads of the city. I saw a metal barrier that stretched across the road. There was a small hut, fairly close to the roadside. As I approached, a man emerged and signalled for me to stop. I lowered my window and crouched down to see inside. “Morning miss, can I enquire as to your business here in Lakeside.” His voice was deep and cheerful. I introduced myself and explained that I was moving to Lakeside and that I owned property here. He looked confused, and I’m pretty sure he tried to smell me. I pulled out the deeds to show him that I was telling the truth. He stood up and raised the barrier. He waved me on my way, still looking unsure. I headed off thinking how strange it is for a town to have a guard. Well, at least it’s safe here. I shrugged. SAM. I lowered the barrier back down once the car had passed through. I felt uneasy. It was very rare that we had unexpected visitors here. I had already sent the supply truck through this morning and wasn’t expecting anyone else. So I was surprised to see her red car coming up the road. I had figured that she was probably lost, but she had claimed to be moving here, even had the paperwork to back it up. Maybe the Alpha had forgotten to tell me that we had a new arrival in town. Although why he would have allowed it, I don’t know. Lakeside isn’t a normal town. It’s a werewolf pack, and that girl didn’t smell like a wolf. Although she didn’t really smell completely human either. I hoped I had done the right thing by letting her in. She had property deeds, so surely the Alpha must know she’s coming, right? s**t I better let him know about her just in case.
