Forty Five》 Alone on the desert.

There was no time to waste. Powell I parked and ran into the airport, purchasing a one way ticket to France. I was making good time, I should make this flight. The security guard noticed there was a flag on my ID. They pulled me aside. I silently turned to go back into the terminal. The guard grabbed my arm. "Sir, you need to come with me." I layed down, pretending to have a heart attack. "My heart, I need my medicine. Please, take me to the doctor." The guards radioed to the medics. I was checked out for a heart atack. There was no sign of issues on my EKG. A federal agent aproached me. " Powell Jonas, we've been looking for you." He smiled. I had no recourse so I pretended to be old, senile, feeble. They pulled me up to cuff me. I screamed for help. "Help me please! What's going on. I don't understand all this." The agent held up his cell phone. "Dad, I'm begging you, tell them where she is, please daddy, please!" Yelled my son Brandon. I quietly told him. "She's dead. She jumped off the truck somewhere in the desert. She's dead son. There's no way she made it out alive. She is gone son." I cried now, thinking about losing her. ********** Brandon I dropped the phone, feeling inconsolable. I couldn't believe that. I wouldn't believe it. Antonio and I drove down the roads that my father might have taken. There was no sign of blood or a body. We refused to give up. I was walking with a cane, choosing not to use my wheel chair anymore. I was slow but, I was doing it. Antonio got us a room for the night. I called Henry. "Any hits on the cell phone Delilah was using?" Henry sent me a map of the likely cell towers that Delilah would have driven by. "The phone died around here." I circled the hills near the Ramona California area. Powell had tuned off at some point, when he had noticed she was gone, he turned east. Antonio made a call. He had friends in the area. He called and asked for a home to use as our home base. Antonio's good friend Charlie came through, he had gone through rehab with him. "I got you bro. I'll send you the door code. Stay as long as you need." The next morning, Antonio and I set out for the high desert home. We made it by noon. Antonio pulled his sports car up to the house. He opened the door for me and pulled me out. " Okay, let me open up the house. We got a jeep in the garage we can use." I sat for a moment on the back porch, scanning the horizon. A black tarantula crawled over my foot. I move it away quickly. Antonio had the jeep ready. He called Henry. "We are heading out, you pick up Lillianne yet?" Henry had left her in Tijuana to wait for Powell. Since Powell had shown up in Florida, Lillianne needed a ride back now. *********** Lillianne I sat at a bar, drinking a tequila. A handsome Mexican nodded to me. "You all alone senora?" I nodded. He grinned. "Then let me buy you a drink." I agreed. The man dropped a pill in my drink. I was leary. I switched drinks with him, when he looked towards the door. I downed my drink. "Thanks cowboy, I got a ride coming." I stood up. The man smiled. He downed his drink and looked at his watch. He knew that I should get sleepy soon. Then he would grab me to sell my body for many pesos. I watched him. His eyes began to close. I sat really close to him, then put my hand into his pocket and took his wallet. I got a thrill from playing his game against him. Taking his money, I bought a round of drinks for the whole bar. All the men cheered. Henry pulled up then. He whistled to me. I nodded and jumped off the table I had been dancing on. He saw me lean over and moon the men there. They all laughed and threw there hats in the air. I bid them," Adios!" Henry grinned. "You just couldn't sit there quietly and wait for me, could you gal?" I shook my head. "I'm loco." He kissed my cheek. "Thank you for trying to meet up with Powell here. You are very brave." I turned red. "It was super fun." I put my head down and passed out. I was drunk. ********* The desert ..... Delilah I think I was going on day 5. I was hearing a loud noise like a motor, so I walked to the edge of the road, straining. Maybe it was a generator. I climbed a rocky hill. It was a huge wind turbine. It rose up along a hillside, there were many of them all lined up. I went under the closest one. Maybe I could climb it, see the landscape ahead. I found a door. It was locked. I looked around and found a piece of metal. I used it to pry the door open. It took me hours. I didn't give up. Finally it moved enough for me to slide inside. Looking up, there was a ladder system inside. I began my ascent up. My leg was scabbing over. I knew it was in jeopardy of getting infected. I covered it every night with the inside of the cactus and had tried to use some agave plants to heal it. I kept climbing. It was very loud. It took me an hour to get up to the top. I made my way out to the main turbine, I saw a platform. There, I saw it... a town up ahead. I had hope now. There was a town ahead! I stayed up there and scouted for a water source. I was very hungry, but I had eaten the nopales. And a few bugs. I did what I had to do. I decided to spend the night in the big turbine, so I slowly started my decent down. What I didn't see was a small camera at the top of that big wind turbine. It was placed there to monitor for birds. I had briefly been in the view of that small camera. I kept moving. Making it to the last ladder, I slipped, landing on my injured leg. I screamed as I felt a snap. " Oooh, nooo, no, no,no." I had broken my weakened leg clean through. It felt like it was on fire. I fell back and must have passed out from the searing pain. The bone was exposed at my lower leg. ********* Brandon Antonio and I drove slowly down the desert road. We saw a river down below. I told Antonio to stop as the road rounded a corner. We had to slow down. "Here, she might have jumped from here." Antonio ran to the side of the road. He saw a dried spot of blood. "Could be road kill."He told me. Antonio ran down into the wooded area. He called out. "Delilah!" No response. I knew she would try her phone. I took out my phone. No signal. " Antonio, she would have tried to climb a hill to get a signal." We drove the jeep up to the highest point. No signal. I nodded."She would have walked back, not ahead. She was hiding from my dad, she wouldn't walk towards him." I rode on the back of the jeep, hanging on as Antonio drove. " Stop!" I Yelled. Antonio pulled over. "Go look in that shack." I called her name. "Delilah!" Antonio ran down. He wiped his neck. It was very hot now. He saw something. It was a group of metal lined up, hubcaps. He saw a cactus had been cut up. Then he found the cell phone. He looked around. She had been here. He ran back. "She's alive!" He yelled. He showed me the evidence. I put my head down and prayed. "Please hold on, we are coming." Antonio called Henry. Henry went into action. He called his son in law Adam. There was a group of rescuers heading south. Adam had put his money to good use. A black helicopter landed a few feet away from Antonio and I. We got in as it rose up, looking for Delilah. The pilot used infrared technology to scan for her. We were up there as long as we could before we had to refuel. There was not one hit. Of course we could not see her in the metal of the wind turbine. ******** Delilah I heard myself moaning. My mouth felt very dry. I opened one eye and saw my leg lying at an odd angle, it made me sick. You got this, no problem. Just stand up. Move. Find a stick and use it to walk. You got this. I moved a little, sucking in my breath. It was too painful. I needed to move it really fast. I jerked back and pulled my leg back and straightened it out. "Ahhhh, s**t!" Holding it and pulling it straight, I sat back to catch my breath. It was unbearably hot in the wind turbine, not helping my situation. I had sweated through my formerly white slip. My hair was a rats nest. ********** Brandon Antonio and I drove back to our home base. We had scanned the whole area, no signs of her. Adam spoke, putting a new spin on the rescue. "If I was out here, I would gravitate towards any technology I can find."
