12 I started, but Eric merely lifted his eyes to the arched entrance. Basileus stood there in the shadows, and he stepped out to reveal his tense face. Eric slipped his hand off mine as he stood. “Your defenses need improving.” Basileus’ furrowed gaze settled on the broken bench and the ashen remains of the revenant. “So it would seem.” He strode over and knelt on one knee beside the pile of dust where he used his palm to scoop up a bit of the remains. A shadow fell across his brow as he studied the ash. “It has been many years since I have seen a revenant, even in this state.” He lifted his gaze to Eric. “Why did this creature invade my island?” Eric pursed his lips. “The intruders are searching for a... an important object situated somewhere beneath our feet.” Basileus frow
