After a week of meetings overseas, I’d spent the afternoon at Split, prepping, catching up on the catering gigs, with my cell phone back to its original position—glued to my ear. Then later, I’d come up to find my family crowding our loft. My mother had brought enough food to feed a football team, and everyone was still here, being loud and overwhelmingly loving, my nieces and nephews running around the place, while Dad chased them like a big Norse troll. As I stood amidst the chaos and mess of our kitchen, drink in hand, so tired I had to lean on the counter to keep my knees straight, I gazed around at the scene and couldn’t help smiling to myself.
