Chapter 1
Emmet
Have you ever read a story about a hidden supernatural world where an Alpha werewolf king has been searching for his Luna? There is always some major plot twist that she thinks she’s human the whole time and then BAM! She’s thrown into the deep end trying to navigate this new life she never even knew existed.
You know what I’d like to read about, just once? A beautiful Luna Queen searching for her tall dark and handsome Alpha. Now that would make a great story, don’t you think?
My name is Emmet Grey. Some would call me a nerd simply because I like to read and play video games. What seventeen year old doesn’t like playing games? Please enlighten me.
Tall, dark and handsome certainly doesn’t refer to the way I appear though. My pale skin regularly needs sunscreen applied. My icy blue eyes constantly covered by my Oakley sunglasses and my dead straight jet black hair flaps in the wind behind me as I take my morning jog along the wharf in Port Douglas Queensland, my home town.
You would think that living here my whole life, I’d build up some sort of tolerance to the sun but not in this crazy tropical climate. Sunburn is definitely not my best friend. That’s Oliver, but more on him at another time.
I round the last corner of my jog and slow down in pace as I reach my driveway. An envelope in the mailbox catches my eye and my head tilts to the side. What’s that famous saying by Vernon Dursley? “No post on Sundays.”
Taking out my AirPods, my favourite song Zombified by Falling In Reverse pauses mid song. I grab the envelope and examine the elegant handwriting. ‘The Grey Family’ is the only thing written, no return address, no postage stamp. This was hand delivered, weird.
I unlock the front door and make my way upstairs to shower. The house is empty which means my younger sister Eliza must already be at her part time job McDonalds while my parents are likely out for their usual Sunday morning romantic stroll along the beach. Ugh, romance. I would roll my eyes right about now if anyone could actually see me.
I drop the letter on my desk and take a shower. Afterwards, I make myself some breakfast and turn on my Xbox. Oliver is already online and we play games for hours, so long that I completely forget about the letter.
That night, my family is gathered around the dining table for dinner. My mum Eleanor always likes us to eat together as a family. Some sort of tradition, I suppose.
“How was everyone’s day?” My dad Elias asks. I swear this is like Deja vu except this is literally my life every single day.
My sister Eliza speaks up first. “Work was busy…” She begins some story which is the same as every other work story so naturally, I zone out. She talks too much.
I’m busy shovelling mums usual Sunday roast into my mouth when dad calls on me.
“What about you Em?” He asks.
“Hmm?” My eyes snap up to meet his.
“Anything interesting happen today?”
“Not really, same s**t different day.” I mumble.
“Watch your language!” Mum scolds me before loading up my plate once more.
“Actually, some weird letter came today. I totally forgot about it.” I say.
“What letter?” Eliza asks around a mouthful of roast pumpkin.
“I’ll go get it.” I jump the stairs two at a time and come back down in a flash. “Now, I know we are too old for our Hogwarts letters so this better be our invite to the Yule Ball or something.” I joke.
“What is he talking about?” Dad asks Eliza.
“Harry Potter dad, don’t worry about it.” Eliza rolls her eyes.
I take my seat again and drop the letter in the middle of the table. Everyone leans forward and stares at it as if it may explode at any minute.
“So who gets to open it? It’s addressed to the whole family.” I ask.
Mums hand reaches out and snatches the letter off the table. “No one will be opening it.” She shoves it in her pocket.
“What? Why? Maybe it’s important!” Eliza whines, flipping her long black hair over her shoulder.
“Eleanor.” Dad says to mum, his tone is one of warning.
“No! End of discussion, we will never speak of this again.” Mum snaps at him.
Way to go Emmet, turning Sunday dinner into an awkward affair!
