Chapter Nineteen With the echo of the gunshot still ringing in his ears, Jasper dodged behind the tool chest parked near the airplane. He fumbled for his gun, adrenaline surging through his body. “Evelyn! Are you all right?” A muffled squeal sounded then the clatter of footsteps. “She’s fine, Captain MacPherson. For now.” Jasper’s heart dropped, and he peered around the cabinet. Corporal Vance stood behind the landing gear of the P-51 with one arm holding Evelyn to his chest and the other hand aiming a gun at her head. The mechanic had fooled them all with his act.
