Chapter 4 Skeeter Jones was actually only a year younger than Lisa, but was much smaller. His very skinny frame, complete with long feet, and a small angular head had led to his name of Skeeter, a colloquialism for mosquito. He was a little lighter than the other colored children; supposedly his grandfather had been white. This lack of blackness led to a general shunning by the other colored kids because their parents, as often the white parents did, felt the races should “stay with their own kind”.
