Jaessa POV
Matt is suddenly at my side, and he places his arm around my shoulder directing me away from the others.
I look up to my uncle-figure in confusion.
“Listen, Jaessa, you have not only the powers of your mother, but also of your father. He is not only one of the best trackers ever to be trained by Terrence, alongside myself, but he’s also a Jade Wolf.” Matt says quietly to me.
“Ok?” I reply, really unsure of the message.
“Jaessa, you are a Jade Wolf. What are the powers of a Jade?” He presses.
“Protection, I know this, it’s just so hard to focus.” I admit.
“Right. Protection, so keep your wolf to the forefront of your mind, and allow her room to fight this battle too. Also, the Jade Wolf can sense other Jade wolves, you can find one another from thousands of miles away, you can breach one-another’s minds and you can feel the other’s pain and weakness.” Matt quickly tells me, as I continue looking at him like he’s speaking a foreign language. “Trystan is also a Jade Wolf.” He finally says.
I think for a moment trying to remember if I knew this, and I think I did at one point but forgot. “But then he can also read and sense me too right?” I ask as the thought dawns on me.
“Correct, and he’s had more time and training to come into his wolf, so you’re going to have to fake him out, and enhance your Jade abilities with those of your maternal witch genes.” Matt guides me.
Right. It makes sense, even though I have no idea how to accomplish any of this.
“You focus on the witchy business, I got the Jade.” Tara says to me, fully alert and ready for battle.
I nod to Matt before I answer him, “Ok, I think I can do this.” I tell him more confidently than I actually feel.
Matt releases my shoulders as I return back to the training area of the courtyard.
“Ready, Princess?” Trystan sneers at me and I roll my eyes.
“Certainly, jester.” I reply smugly, earning a playful growl from the Alpha werewolf.
“Battle commence!” Travis shouts out from the sidelines as Trystan and I square off.
“Let me forward.” Tara urges, as I open my soul to allow her room to press into the forefront of my consciousness. There is an awe that falls over the spectators.
“Your emerald eyes are very telling.” Trystan murmurs to me just before his expression changes and his eyes shift to the most brilliant glowing green and I realize his wolf is residing just below the surface as well. He slowly closes the gap between us as I shift my weight in preparation.
“Remember, you focus on the witch gifts, I got the rest.” Tara tells me.
Trystan suddenly lunges forward and strikes out at me, and instinct takes over as I swiftly dodge his blow, then turn, landing a kick to the side of his calf. He doesn’t even stumble before he regains his footing, turning and bringing his knee up towards my previously injured flank. I force myself to dissipate from where I stand, reappearing on his other side before striking out with a punch to his jaw. Without faltering, he turns on his heel and grabs me by the throat, and I shimmer once again, out of his grasp, and reappear behind him, landing a blow with my elbow to the back of his head.
Trystan reaches around, grabbing my waist, and I raise my knee with all my force and drive it right into his side. He grunts but doesn’t release me, instead he lifts me off the ground, before bringing me around to his front to lock his arms around me. I throw my head back, busting his nose, before mule kicking him directly in his knee cap. He finally let’s go as he stumbles backward.
I take a moment to catch my breath and regain my footing as I watch him shake off my blows before returning to an offensive stance. He tenses a moment and suddenly I know his next move and am already prepared. Trystan lunges, and I lunge right back, lowering my body aiming for his legs. He misses the target of my torso while strike out at his already injured knee, knocking him off balance.
Trystan lands hard on his right side on the ground, but not before locking his arm around my thigh, taking me down with him. I try to twist out of his grasp but he’s too strong, so I thrust myself from this physical form and space, and reappear behind him, locking my arms around his throat, and my legs around his waist. His arms are scrambling as he tries to release the grasp of my arms and legs, but I throw every ounce of energy into choking the life out of him.
“Halt!” Travis shouts out once again, and we both suddenly release the other. “Alright, that’s enough for now.” Travis commands and I roll away from Trystan, as he catches his breath before he jumps to his feet.
“Nice fight, little cousin.” Trystan grins down at me before offering his hand, which I take and he pulls me to my feet.
“Yes, very well done. Now go clean yourselves up before dinner, and we will meet in the Alpha office afterwards to focus on another task vital to Jaessa’s training.” Travis directs.
“Oh sure, I completely volunteer my office.” Trystan rolls his eyes as his dad shoots him a smug look.
These two Alpha males and their show of strength is far too comical, and I can’t help but giggle as I head back to the packhouse.
