Chapter Nine - I have a woman

1165 Words
Javier’s point of view. Who was this woman that Miguel introduced me to? She seemed so calm about this whole marriage arrangement. I did not understand why she was doing this anymore. I wanted to know why she was getting married to me and I promised myself that I would find out why she wanted to marry me. I heard a knock on my door before someone walked in. I did not have to lift my head to be able to recognize who that was. I lifted my head, and it was just as I guessed. “Hey? You wanted to see me?” Miguel made himself comfortable on the couch as I reluctantly nodded my head, signing the last document on my desk. I placed my pen on the desk, taking a deep breath before standing up. “Miguel, this cousin of yours. Does she have a family? Or friends?” I walked over to him trying to get an answer out of him. “She has a sister who’s married and her father who lives in town. Why?” He inquired, looking worried as I went to sit adjacent to him. “I am curious though. When I met her earlier, she seemed too calm about this. Did she even bother to read the contract?” I paused a question hoping that he might give me the answer that I was looking for. “JT, if you think there’s something that’s going on, trust me, I will never do anything that would compromise our friendship”. Miguel assured me as I shook my head. I doubted him. I have trust issues, so I am sure he was thinking that I was questioning his loyalty to me.: I just do not understand why she would agree to something like that. I know many people would question the contract and demand more, but with her, it’s like whatever I am offering she’s ready to take”, I added, letting out my thoughts and curiosity about this woman as I stood up. pacing around the office “She is desperate. She needs a place to live and, plus, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity that she has, so I am sure it doesn’t really matter”, he tried to convince me as I nodded my head. “Anyway, I will leave it up to you to get her up to speed on what’s the next step and going at my profile. Did you produce something for her?” I inquired, knowing too well my family might try to get me to let go of her if there were any issues with money. “About that, I don’t think it’s a clever idea. Why don’t you two spend a day together and get to know each other? It will….” I paused, watching him trying to hook me up with his cousin. I put my hands in the pockets of my trousers as I tilted my head to look at him. “Never mind. I will forward you all the details.” He stood up from the chair, putting his hand in his pocket. “Speaking of knowing each other, did you know Luke Simmons and Madison know each other?” He asked me about Madison, whom he assured me that he had no feeling for. “Luke? Yes, they were together at Yale. Why?” I asked him and he shook his head. “Never mind. I just wanted to be sure about something> See you later” He looked disturbed as he tried to leave my office like someone was coming after him. I smiled at myself, nodding my head as I walked over to my desk to focus on my work for the rest of the afternoon. It was a risk I was taking but it was work because this was going to help me with my family and make sure that I kept my position. I was about to bury myself in work again when my phone went off. I sighed heavily before picking it up. I checked the caller ID, and it was my mother. I let out an exasperated sigh before deciding to pick up. “Hello?” “Hello Dear? How are you doing? Why do you sound so low?” She inquired through the phone as I sighed heavily. She did not understand what was happening and hearing about my father’s retirement just started to stress me, knowing too well that my siblings might try to take the company. “I am fine. Just tired”. I quickly cut her off. “You don’t sound too good. IS something bothering you? Is it a girl?” She tried as much as she could to find out what was happening. “Mom! I said I am fine. I have things I need to get back to. What they?” I tried as much as possible to get rid of her. “Well, what are you doing this weekend? I have invited Adelyn over for lunch, why don’t you join us??” She excitedly said to me as I let out a sigh. “I can’t. I am meeting someone”. I wanted to get her off my case as fast as I could so that I didn’t have to deal with her convincing me to get involved with Adelyn. She was a beautiful woman, but she was too arrogant and had too much pride. She was not really my type. “Is it a woman? Someone, I know? When can I meet her? Who are…?” She got curious about who I was meeting. “You don’t know her. I will bring her over when I am ready. Let me get back to work, I have a project that I need to get approved”, I said to her, trying as much as possible to get rid of her fast. “Okay. Make sure you bring her to me. Have a good day” she said to me as I took a deep breath. “Okay. I will bye” “Alright dear, I will wait to meet her,” she said to me as I cut off the call without responding. What was I going to do now that I told my mother that I had a woman in my life when I did not? This was not good at all. I needed to talk to that lady and make sure that she was ready to start meeting my relatives. I thought about it and went first to check on the document that Miguel said was going to send over to me. I needed to make sure that her response and mine were always the same in case of anything. My mother was good at picking up things and she was someone I didn’t want to know that I was having such contracts with a woman who had no proper background.
