Chapter 18 Beth launched herself sideways onto her hip, shoving Mark away, wincing when his helmet smacked against the wall. Before she could move, more rock dropped from the roof. A thick chunk of coal landed on her upper arm, knocking her flat. The pain was immediate and huge. Beth screamed, the miner’s voice shrieking an answer. “What happened?” Mark shook his head, his words slow. He sat up and found her with his headlight. “Beth!” “I think it’s just my arm,” she said, her voice tight. She gritted her teeth when he helped her sit up. She’d have bruises from the rest of the rocks, but Beth was sure the bone was broken. “That’s it, we have to get out of here,” Mark said. “Can you stand?” “No, wait,” Beth said. “This is why we came in here.
