Chapter 12
Beth opened the door to general chaos, more than she’d ever seen in the town hall. Every office door was open, and several grim-faced people ran through in different directions. Tina was standing just inside the exit door, talking into her cell phone and crying. When she turned and saw Beth walking toward her, Tina met her in a tight hug.
“What’s going on?” Beth said.
“There’s been…” Tina stepped back, wiping at her face but barely able to talk. “A school bus went off the road heading out of town. Right into the river.”
“Oh no,” Beth whispered, her hand on her chest. “Are your boys okay?”
“No one knows yet. That’s why they took the fire truck, in case the ambulances aren’t enough. They won’t let me go with them, even though I’m right here!”
