Chapter 9 Beth gritted her teeth and slowed down for yet another gigantic rut in the overgrown gravel road. This narrow path through the thick brush and trees didn’t have any kind of sign or number, only a faint blue trace on the thick book of county maps she’d checked out from the library. A few half-rotted trees, thankfully not quite blocking the way, made it clear no one else had been out here for a long while. She’d also borrowed her brother’s old four wheel drive work truck, knowing her sporty sedan wouldn’t have a chance on these old farm and logging tracks. This was still a bigger challenge than she’d expected. Several well-maintained modern mining roads she’d already checked out were much easier to drive on, but they hadn’t brought her any closer to that lonesome abandoned pit.
