Chapter 4

1634 Words
The i***t had shut her out of his mind! She had tried to put him at ease and he had shut her out. Sue was furious and just a little embarrassed for good measure. She stood at the window, watching the werewolf get familiar with the territory. She observed from a distance as Agnes gave him the basic brief tour and her wolf's ears had not missed the little chat the old hag had given him in the end. She had well expected it, and hence it had come as no surprise. Sue was just pissed at the nosy old bat, but she could do nothing much about it. She then decided to confront Rick instead for his rude behavior. She sneaked out of the house and headed in the direction she had seen him go. It was impossible to catch a wolf off guard, so she was not shocked when she rounded a corner and found him standing with his arms folded over his chest, waiting for her. The moment she had stepped outside, Rick had become aware of her. The wind had carried her scent over to him and his wolf had jumped to attention inside him. The wolf’s reaction left him both puzzled and concerned in the same breath. Now he stood in front of her, once again captured by her eyes. Out here in the sunlight, the color of her eyes turned more golden than brown. But as her wolf took a peek, he saw a flush blue before she pulled it back. She still hadn’t spoken even though he had raised an expectant eyebrow, but her scent was telling him plenty. Her natural scent that had reminded him of spring rain and fresh flowers was emitting a touch of anger and tension. That was the downside of being a wolf. All their emotions could be read from their scent. It took many years to master how to hide and disguise one’s scent. And Sue clearly lacked that lesson. He gave her a few more seconds to state what she had come to say, but she remained mute. With a frown, he finally asked, “Was there something you needed, Ms. Daniels?” His voice seemed to have snapped her back from whatever trance she had entered. She visibly collected herself and responded, “Mr. Ham… it is Ham, right?” He quietly nodded. “Ok. Mr. Ham, I find it extremely rude to shut me out of your mind when I was only trying to make your welcome far more favorable.” “Ms. Daniels…” “Sue,” she interrupted, “please, call me Sue.” “Ms. Daniels,” he said more firmly, “my apologies if you found offense to my actions.” Sue stared at him in shock. She had expected way more than that from him. A much more sincere apology for starters. She was lost for words. When it was obvious Sue wouldn’t be adding anything to the conversation, his dark eyebrows rose again in anticipation. Anything else? Sue compressed her lips in irritation and quietly turned and walked away. She was only reaching the door to the house when she heard him in her mind, “In the future, you will consult with me before you leave the house, Ms. Daniels.” It was not a question or a suggestion. It was an order given in a cold, hard tone. She did not bother to respond directly to his mind. She spoke out loud, knowing full well his ears would catch every word. “I am the Ruling Alpha’s Daughter,” she emphasized every word with pride as she spoke, “I give the orders. I don’t take orders.” With that, she walked into the house and slammed the door shut. Rick had heard her loud and clear. A ghost of a smile played on his lips. She had a fighting spirit. He wouldn’t have expected less from her, but she was now under his charge and he had no wish to fail. Fighting spirit or not, he will make sure she followed what he said. He turned back to complete a sweep of the grounds. Although Kurian was concerned with his daughter’s safety, he only assigned one wolf to watch over her. A logic that had puzzled Rick from the very beginning. But it was not his place to question. His job was to do as he was told. The house they were occupying sat on the very edge of the Peten’s territory and was just a walking distance away from the nearest human town. The humans did not know of them, but they had their suspicions and beliefs. It had been the most convenient place to house them because, unlike the rest of the Pack, Sue had been raised in the human town away from the Pack. Kurian’s mate, Sue’s mother, had died when Sue was still a little pup. The Alpha had been in no position to raise his daughter on his own. Even with the help of the Pack, it had been an impossibility. So Kurian had done the only thing possible. He had entrusted his daughter to his sister, who lived in a human town with a human mate. Although it had raised many questions, Kurian had stood by his decision. Sue had only returned to the Pack lands when she became of age and she expected to take a mate of her own soon enough. That was when she had come under the care of Agnes, an old grumpy wolf originally from another Pack who had mated with a wolf from Peten’s. Her mate had long passed on to the afterlife, but Agnes had remained on Peten’s land. Nothing was a secret in the Pack’s life. That was how Rick knew all this. And the few details the rest of the Pack did not have the privilege of knowing; his position as second in command of the Pack warriors had guaranteed he heard it all. When Rick headed back to the house, he found Sue and Agnes in a full-blown argument. Agnes was growling low in her throat, and her arms were covered in her wolf’s fur. Even in her old age, the woman looked ready to transform and fight. Puzzled by the lack of control from the old wolf, Rick turned to look at Sue, and standing before Rick, was a gorgeous gray wolf with blue eyes. Sue has completely shifted and exposed her teeth in a threat. Rick blinked as his own wolf wanted to come out and play. Exercising a huge amount of self-control, he turned back to Agnes and asked, “What is going on here?” Agnes stood, shaking violently with anger, but did not say a word or look at Rick. She kept her eyes fully on Sue as though she feared the wolf would attack any second without warning. Rick turned back to Sue and spoke directly to her mind, “Care to explain?” Sue growled at him, only sparing him a glance before turning back to Agnes. Rick inquired again, “What is going on? Tell me now!” he put enough authority in his voice that she was immediately startled and looked at him. “She burned my books.” The statement was laced with such anger, Rick shuddered as the words reached his mind. He turned to Agnes. “You burned her books?” he inquired in a cool manner. “They were not appropriate for her. Those books were filling her head with the wrong ideas.” She had barely finished speaking her bitter words before Sue was growling even louder and advancing toward Agnes. Rick had only seconds to react. He quickly transformed into the air as he leaped into Sue’s path, blocking her from attacking the old woman. His clothes lay in tatters all over the floor as they had ripped off his transforming body. Rick’s wolf was much bigger than Sue’s. His musk was even stronger and more intoxicating. Sue was breathing hard and fast, and Agnes was all but forgotten. For all the barking the old wolf had made, she had no bite to follow through. She had whimpered and backed away the moment Sue had advanced. Now she stood shaking behind Rick. Rick stood still, waiting for Sue to make her next move. He knew she could not attack him. Female wolves were known to be stronger than some male wolves. But not a male that had spent years training for fights. She was not, however, going to give him the satisfaction of thinking she was scared of him. Sue took a menacing step towards him and immediately regretted it. Rick growled loudly and attacked. He effortlessly pinned her to the cold, hard floor. Then everything went still. Only Agnes’ gasp broke the silence. He held her down, even though she did not fight him. Then he spoke to her, “Have you proved your point?” She was infuriated by his arrogance. And tried to get away from him. He did not give her any room. He spoke again, “I asked you a question, Ms. Daniels. Are you done making your point?” “Yes.” Even through his mind, he could tell that response had been forced out through her teeth. He stood and removed his weight from her. “I suggest you transform back to your human form in your room, so you can save what little of your dignity you have left for today,” With that snide statement to her mind. He turned and majestically walked away. His wolf dwarfed the small passageway as he made his way to his own room. Sue stood there in a mix of anger and humiliation.
