WHEN THEY GOT BACK to reception, the receptionist was busy on the phone. Rafferty drummed his fingers on the reception counter, and looked pointedly at the receptionist, hoping she’d get the message. He saw from her name badge, that she answered to Ms Harriet Temple. He thought that Ms was a giveaway of spinster status. Llewellyn waited patiently by his side, not drumming his fingers. He’d have to have a talk with Llewellyn, Rafferty decided. He needed to persuade him to at least admit the possibility of Babbington’s guilt. All right, to do that, he’d have to painstakingly go through the evidence; all of the evidence, not just the best bits. But at the end of the day, he preferred Llewellyn with him than not.
