I had never seen an expression like that one on Ray's face before... DAMN IT!

Thinking about how he stared at me then, I couldn't explain in words all that I felt when I saw that sad, almost broken look on his face scared me more than anything else I had been dealing with in the last few days.
And as if I had lost my ability to speak, everything that I wanted to say to him, including my apology, seemed to get stuck in my throat as I watched him run a hand through his hair, moving away while hiding his gaze from me.
