Chapter 27

1048 Words

I was about to go crazy when I easily defeated Mark. He's all swagger and bluster, but I have the abilities. Mary, having lost against me, genuinely cheers for Mark throughout the game, a heartening sign of support considering how the two of them acted last night. It is a comfort that there is no longer any tension between them. To Mark's credit, he accepts his defeat gracefully. "I'll get you next time," he promises. A "good game." Following Shawn, we play a tight game that finishes with a tie, and Mary and Mark cheer him on in jesting. Shawn admits humbly, "I guess I got lucky," even though it's obvious he's a good player. I joke, "The beer must be softening my aim." He looks at my empty bottle and says, "Want another?" I slap my forehead. You must all need to go to bed, I'm sure.
