“You look like s**t”. Is the first thing my father says as I walk into the living room, his eyes running over me with a critical gaze. And then. “Thanks for getting her, Nico”.
Nico just nods, backs up to the door and leaves. Honestly, the only way he got me here was the threat that dad would stop my allowance if I didn’t. I have some expensive … habits I can’t pay on what I earn.
I ignore my dad and go to hug my baby sister Maddalena, who is seventeen. I can’t help but notice that she lost weight. “Hi sis, you look a little pale, are you okay ?”
“Yeah, I am fine”. She mumbles, hugging me back. “I just had a cold, I am better now”.
I glance at my father but he just huffs. “She said she is fine”.
“Where is mom … and Diego ?” I ask. Diego is my fourteen year old baby brother.
“Your mom is in Paris with a couple of friends and Diego is at a football camp in Rome”. My father says.
I breathe in slowly, straightening my back and looking at him. “So why have you summoned me here ? I have better things to do”.
“Sweetie, can you just give us a moment alone ?” He asks my sister.
She gets up, looking almost like she is about to do a curtsy. “Of course daddy”.
I watch as she scurries out the room, then I turn to glare at my father. “You better not be …”.
“Shut up and listen, your ungrateful brat”. He hiss. “You are here for your sister's sake”.
“For my sister's sake ?” I shake my head, not getting it. “What are you talking about ?”
His smile is icy. “I made a deal with a man, and now he needs some … security to make sure I will keep my part of the deal … and he wants my daughter … so, he is getting you”.
“Wait what ? Hell no … you don't own me. You can’t … give me away like that …”. I am honestly gobsmacked, I mean I know my father is … a bastard but this I did not see coming.
“Listen to me and listen to me good … I can do whatever the bloody hell I want”. He hiss. “You don’t want me to give them your sister, do you ?”
I shake my head. “Of course not”.
But I also have a very bad feeling that he and I have different reasons not to want to send my sister.
“So it’s settled, Nico will take you there tomorrow”. He gets up. “And you better behave, for your own sake, this is not a man that takes bad behaviour lightly”.
And it hits me. “f**k, you dumb bastard, you have gotten yourself mixed up with the mafia, haven’t you ? Forget it, neither me or Lena is going to pay for your mistake”.
His hand flies out, grabbing my hair. My father might not be the biggest man, but he is still bigger than me and much heavier. “You are mine, so when I say you are going, you are”.
As he drags me to my room I do fight, but only to a degree, I fear what he might do if I make him angry enough. Also I am very much aware that I would never get away from here, even if I managed to get loose from him.
He slams open the door to my old room and throws me on the bed. I instantly pull as far away as I can. “Do not touch me”.
“No worries honey”. He makes a disgusted face. “With what you run around doing I wouldn’t be interested if you offered”.
A shudder goes through my body at the memories assaulting me. “Like I would ever …”.
“From what I hear you do to just about everyone else these days”. He huffs. “You are a disgrace to this family”.
“You are a disgrace, to this family, to your gender, to politics and to your country”. I hiss at him.
His eyes narrow in a way I know too well, but then he smiles. “I am not even gonna bother with you… you will get what you deserve at your new home”.
And with that he leaves me, locking the door behind him.
I throw myself at the bed, trying to tell myself that at least it can’t be worse than being in my fathers house, I am just not sure if I believe it.
In the end I cry myself to sleep, it seems my life once again has taken a turn for the worse.
