"Stop complaining." A scolded and I crossed my arms. "Big baby." She mumbled and I kicked her shin.
She had me in black high waist shorts that buttoned on both sides... she called it anti-rape wear just in case, and then a dark red top that showed some cleavage and it was really tight so even if Mark did attack me he would have to rip it off of me. I was wearing vans that matched the shirt and my necklace. My hair was straightened and I only had foundation, eyeliner and mascara on. Nothing too much.
"You look like mom." Ivory whispered from the door way and Aurora turned to look at her and then back at me.
"We all look like mom in some ways. You have her smile Ivory." I told her and stood up and walked closer and pulled her into a hug. "Make sure A doesn't follow me." I whispered to her and she giggled and nodded. "Alight, I better get going... unless you think I can stay."
"No! You are going!" Aurora shouted and I smiled and nodded. "Do I have to take you there myself?" She asked and I gave her a flat look. "Fine. Call when you are on your way home." She told me and I nodded and grabbed the small bag with my wallet, phone and pepper spray inside and threw it over my shoulder.
"Have fun." Ivory called as she and Aurora sat on the porch to watch me walk away. Only when I was on the bus did I think I should have driven there so I would make a quicker get away.
Mark and I never set a time to meet up, but somehow I just knew that he was going to be there waiting. 10 minutes on the bus and another 5 walking I pushed open the door to the bar and walked to the stools and faced forward, even when I knew Mark was walking up right behind me.
He hadn't even touched me yet and I shuddered.
"Didn't think you would actually show up." He told me leaning next to me and I smiled before giving him a leveled look.
"I told my sister about what you said. The whole mate thing, and she brought my parents into it. Guilt trip." I told him turning to face him now and he kept his eyes on my face.
"You look beautiful." He told me and gave me a small smile and I just returned it.
"Thank you... so if we aren't having our first date at a bar, where are you taking me?" I asked and he just licked his lips and just kept smiling. "Are you not going to tell me? Or did you just come to cancel?"
"Oh I am not canceling. It's called a surprise, come one." He said and held out his hand. I took it and he started pulling me out of the bar right away, keeping me close to his back as well. I didn't miss the looks other guys were giving me.
Aurora would so get it for making me wear safe yet short shorts. I walked with Mark just in front me before he opened a car door for me and waved me in. "Thanks." I got in and buckled up as Mark walked around to his side. "Can I know where we are going now?" I asked him and he just started the car and sent me a wink that made my heart flutter.
"We are going to see an alpha not too far away and getting the history books on wolves and mates." He told me and I opened my mouth and then closed it.
"An alpha?" I asked and he nodded giving me a curious gaze.
"You have never met one have you?" He asked and I looked down and shook my head. "You'll be fine. Just don't keep eye contact with him for very long." He told me and I nodded.
"He won't look at me funny will he?" I asked after a moment and he shook his head. "How did you know I was a wolf as well as a witch?"
"Because a wolf never has a mate that isn't a wolf." He told me giving my face a once over again.
"But that Dean guy.... he knew one he touched my arm too." I saw his jaw clench as soon as I said the word touch and bit my lip wondering if that angered him.
"Harper should have never touched you." He bit out and I shrunk back into the seat and just kept my mouth shut. "Wolves give off this calming touch when they are around what makes a pack strong... since you aren't part of his pack he realized that you were rogue... therefore wolf. But you smell completely of witch." He told me as we got on a highway and started passing a lot of trees.
"How big is a normal pack?" I asked just to keep the conversation going.
"The one I was from was about 800 wolves. Dean's is about 450 and growing. The one we are going to is very small about 200 wolves." He told me and I nodded and tried to think about how 200 was considered small.
"When you shift... does it hurt?" I asked facing him a bit in my seat. He shook his head and I took a small breath. "Not even when it was your first time?" I asked him and he sighed.
"No, have you ever shifted?" He asked and I shook my head when he peeked over at me.
"When do you shift? At a certain age? Or when something triggers it?" I asked and he gave me a look so I clamped my mouth shut.
"You'll learn all about it on our date. We are just picking up the books and then going to a private dinner." He told me and put on his left turn signal and I saw a dirt road and gulped.
"What does it mean to be your mate?" I asked him almost silently as he turned into the road just wanting to remind him of the terms he used towards me two days ago.
"It means that I could never hurt you or let anyone else have you. That no matter what I will belong to you only, and the same for you. That I will give you anything to make you happy just because I want to see you happy. That one day we'll have kids, or decide that we don't want kids... I don't mind either way." He said quickly when he saw my eyes widen at the brashness of his explanation. "That maybe you will want to have a human wedding, and see your sisters every chance you get. That we will have mental bond to talk through even when I am on jobs."
"What do you actually do on your jobs?"
"Protection mostly. Either that or interrogations or retrieving certain people."
"And how did you get caught blowing up a house?" I asked and he laughed before clearing his throat.
"We were actually working with a witch and someone knocked her hand when she was getting ready to throw a fire ball or whatever. Once everything was done and cleaned up I took responsibility of the explosion." He said tersely so I dropped the subject and just waited until a huge house came into sight to even look back over at him. "This is the main pack house. The Alpha family and all teens live here until they go off to college." He told me and I just looked back to the house and tried to think about how many teens that includes with 200 wolves in this pack.
"Mark Jacobs, nice to see you again." A man and woman were waiting for us and basically bowed to Mark.
"As always it is nice to see you Dylan. Hope you and your mate are well. Did you get a chance to get everything done?" He sounded so formal, almost like a rich man rather than a enforcer or whatever he called it.
"Yes I did sir. The books are already there... you know how to get there right?" Dylan asked politely but I saw something flash across Marks face. "Apologies, please enjoy yourselves." He backed away and bowed and I kept my eyes on Mark as we drove off and I knew he felt it because he seemed to try and ignore me as best as he could.
"Hope you don't mind burgers." He said opening his door when we finally stopped a couple miles away from the huge house.
"As long as there are condiments I don't mind." I told him getting out myself despite him already walking around to get my door.
"How about another slight walk?" He asked and wrapped his hand around mine and kept me at his side and his head held high.
"Why did that man bow to you before talking and leaving?" I asked looking up at him and he just seemed to think about it.
"Because of who my brother is... we will get into that in just a little bit." He told me and squeezed my hand and kept looking forward but I kept my gaze on him not looking away until he moved his hands from mine and waved my forward.
I looked around at the tiki torches that surrounded a small table that had a grill next to it and things covered on the table along with two huge books that looked old enough to be the original bible. "Wow." I whispered walking a little bit faster and looked over the books and smiled at the titles.
Mates and Wolves.
"This is how it came to be? Or just what is done within the wolf community?" I asked looking up at him as he watched me.
"What is done. We were a people long before Humans." He told me and I just nodded along with his knowledge and licked my lips. "I'll read it all to you after dinner." He told me and opened up the grill and smiled slightly.
"They are perfect." I said seeing the hamburger patties and getting my own plate and walking closer before making the one I wanted levitate and land on it before getting to work on the condiments. Once everything was on I sat down and waited for Mark to sit as well.
He took a bite just after I did and that was when I noticed his eyes somewhat glowing. "What?" He asked and I licked my lips.
"Your eyes.... they um, they're sort of glowing." I told him and he seemed to concentrate and push it away because they stopped after a moment.
"Better?" He asked and I just nodded. "I usually have that under control, sorry." He said and I shrugged wondering what that meant to have your glowy eyes under control.
We ate in silence, and he finished quicker and started clearing the table so the flies would stop buzzing around. When I was done I put my plate where he had put his and sat back down as he opened up the Wolf book first.
"Can I read it?" I asked him when he was just about to open his mouth to start reading.
"Sure." He said after a moment and turned it around to face me before I took in the context.
Wolves have been on the earth before Humans were even a thought in God's mind. The Moon Goddess told the story of making the oceans and waves before placing the wolves on ground. They bayed at her symbol in the sky but since she could never understand their pleas she made them in her figure as well, both men and women.
Wolves were first not given the opportunity to shift at will, rather just when night came and the moon was high in the sky. But when Humans were put on this earth and discovered the secret they hunted to Werewolves, so The Moon Goddess blessed them with their will.
Wolves in general are pack animals, therefore so are Werewolves. A simple werewolf cannot live without a ranking, or place in a pack. Every wolf has a destiny, whether it is to give birth to the next Alpha or to take down one that is power hungry.
There is a Royal Wolf family that will rein over any Alpha. (See family tree) The King and Queen will be like any other pack, but as powerful as The Moon Goddess when it comes down to knowing who is in the right and who is in the wrong. Each child the recent King or Queen have will be taught like any other Royal family of their history, or etiquette and of manners. The one who finds their mate first will become King and their mate Queen.
Their parents will stick around for a whole year before leaving to live a more quiet life. If there are riches and it must be divided amongst the children evenly no matter what.
Each pack has an Alpha couple, that will have complete control over the rest of the pack mates. When the next Alpha male claims his female any other couple that is newly mated or have not have kids yet will not be able to have kids until the female Alpha is pregnant with her first child. There has been occurrences where while the Alpha female is with child and several other females are, and the Alpha lose the baby the rest of the females will have their children despite their Luna not being pregnant any longer.
The Beta family will be a perpetual cycle. The first born of the Alpha family will always chose a new Beta from the Beta Family.
"Is this all about pack ranking?" I asked looking up at him and he nodded. "Nothing about mates?" I asked and he shook his head, keeping his eyes trained on me as he sat back and relaxed. "Why are you so quiet?"
"Look at the family tree in the back." He told me moving to stand and helped me flip all the pages until a fold out one appeared. He opened it all the way and I looked over all the names and noticing all of their last names were Jacobs.
The last few names were as followed:
Gerald (Roberts) Jacobs+ Abigail Jacobs
