Lars is reading a telegram he and Valene received from Kitty and Reed. The older couple left Willow Creek Falls a few weeks ago. They’re planning on traveling to New York City and San Francisco to visit Reed’s sister Sadie and her family. A visit Reed isn’t looking forward to seeing her husband, Jonathan. Every time they meet Jonathan has his hand out for money. Lars is walking across the street to the boarding house when Cort stops him to tell him the good news about him and Marie. Lars looks at him strangely but congratulates him.
Cort runs to the lumber yard to work and yells, "I'm getting married."
The people on the streets laugh at him.
