Chapter 12 Questions and Queen Bees To say that my emotions were scattered, especially in lower, wetter places, would be an understatement. And it was already lunch time, two hours after Ethan had left me panting in the empty classroom that he’d dragged me to, which I discovered was his chemistry lab. How ironic. “Because you matter.” His words kept bouncing in my head even as I sat down in my usual seat at the back of the cafeteria facing the window. I almost forgot that Nick had come back as I watched him desperately trying to evade the queen bees to get to me, lunch trays in hand. “Hey!” he said plopping down beside me, his back to the window. “Here’s your favorite, cheese and black pepper sandwiches and apple juice. Your big secret’s still safe so it’s my treat.” he said, handing my tray over and then unwrapping the double-decker chicken cheese burger on his tray. He took a huge bite out of it and slurped down nearly half of his coke. “Eww! Pig!” I said in disgust as he licked his lips clean of any extra mayo. “Hey! I need all the calories to get a six pack!” He said. “What you need is a balanced diet and a gym, not foil wrapped poison.” I pointed out. Actually, Nick already had a nice body from being in the basketball team, but he still wanted a six pack. I, on the other hand, hated the idea of packed abs. They looked just plain creepy if you ask me, but almost all the girls in Imphal though it to be a “must” factor for their men, so I had to make my characters have it sometimes. But frankly speaking, a six- or eight-pack abs just looked like an upside down cockroach. I wonder if Ethan has one… “Because you matter.” I shook my head to get that thought out of my head. How did I matter to him? Anyone could say that to anyone, even to someone they consider their student, but I highly doubt they’ll even dream about f*****g them. Plus, we were at a chemistry lab… My conscience seems to have the worst sense of humor. “Hey, I bring you your favorite meal instead of the regular boring salads and you’re still sulking! I’m hurt!” Nick whined while batting his eyelashes like an annoying cheerleader, whose boyfriend had forgotten their first week anniversary. I think a few other nerds and loaners, who prefer the back seats swooned at his looks, but the only thing I did was burst out laughing at his miserable attempt. To be honest, it was creepy. I laughed harder as he made a few funny faces, trying to cheer me up, but then he stopped and joined me in my laughter, probably realizing how weird this looked. Just as we had settled down and I brought my sandwich to my lips, a shrill voice rang over all the noises in the cafeteria, making me shudder and Nick cringe in horror. “Nicki baby! When did you get back? I almost didn’t see you with all the filth around!” Came the voice of the Empress Bee of our high school, Marian Joseph, the sound of her illegally high, high heels felt like someone was hammering a nail into my eardrums. “And I would have preferred to keep it like that.” Nick murmured under his breath. Marian was petite enough that even with such high heels on, she was only an inch or so taller than me. But she had curves in all the right places with huge boobs and a shaped butt, which she flaunted with super short skirts and hot pants. Today she wore a light purple sleeveless top and hot pink mini skirt, with light purple heels, a pink Gucci purse in hand and Ray Bans pushed up into her fake platinum blond hair. I knew it was fake because her eyebrows were a deep brown. Where was the Fashion Police when you need ‘em? “Nicki! Come join us!” Marian said, leaning forward with her hands braced on the table, giving Nick… and me, a good view of her outrageously huge cleavage, making it quite clear she wasn’t wearing a bra. Eww!No need to broadcast girl, I have my own! Oh, s**t! She didnot just call him “Nicki”! “Marian,” Nick’s voice was sickly sweet. Uh-oh... “Yes, Nicki?” A huge smile spread over her near-clownish face, as she leaned forward to hear him, making her huge boobs partly fall out of her top and onto his lunch tray. Eww!I hope Nick’s not eating that anymore, I thought as I removed my lunch tray from the vicinity. But then, instead of answering, Nick gave a wide smile… and dumped his coke down her top. “Ah!” Instantly, the entire cafeteria, who’d been enjoying the show, burst out laughing at Marian jumping up and down, screaming “cold” repeatedly. That was funny but I found the part where her top was plastered to her chest, her n*****s sticking out like water bottle caps (yes they were that huge), hilarious. “You… you… you… ugh!” She pointed her finger at Nick, who was doubled over in laughter just before she was escorted out by her best friends who had bitten down on their lips to stop themselves from laughing as well. But even in all that laughter, I suddenly found myself looking out the window into eyes of intense green. His lips, I noticed, were still a bit red and swollen. It made me smile that I had been able to leave my mark on him. “Because you matter.” But then I saw his gaze shift to the right and a surprised yet gentle smile appear on his face as a petite brunette ran to him from the direction of the front parking of our school. And then the breath left me as he pulled her into a bear hug.
