Chapter 2

Rowan POV "Rowan, wake up!" Having Birke yelling near my ear isn't the best way to wake up. "What do you want, peters? I'm sleeping." Birke Peters is my best friend. He has been my best friend since childhood. It doesn't mean I won't knock him out for waking me up. Has he never heard about not waking a werewolf with a hangover? "Your father sent me to wake you up. He told me to get your ass out of bed and to his office within the hour. Have you forgotten that today is selection day?" Selection day. Honestly, I don't care about it. I don't care who attends the university as long as they match our image. As for the scholarship runts, I don't care as long as they meet the requirements and can clean. They just need to be obedient little servants. I don't understand why my father wants to include me in the decision-making process. In a year I'll be in charge and then I will have to make all the decisions myself. Couldn't he just do it for just one last year? The reason why I don't care is that not all the Wolves that attend university join the Pack. It's only the scholarship runts that join and, on occasion, a couple of others. Most of the servants don't last. The pressures are too much for them. That is why our requirements are so strict. Not that anyone ever really meets the requirements. We still take those who showed they tried. I mean we use them for free labor. I slowly got out of bed. Stretching. The girl next to me opened her eyes. "You need to leave," I told her. As I walked to my bathroom, "I'm naked and he is here." I turned to look at her. "I'm sure he wouldn't care." I said, smirking at Birke. "When will we be seeing each other again?" I looked over at her. She must be kidding. We met last night and she slept with me. Did she really think it would be anything more? That is the thing about having power, you attract all the power-hungry sluts that end up trailing behind you. Every one of them thinks they will be it for me. They must think they are magical in bed. Aceline Leavitt is it for me. She is French. She came here to study Cartography. She has blonde hair and blue eyes. She matches my energy. She doesn’t care if I sleep around, because she doesn’t intend to be faithful. She isn’t part of my pack as she just came to study and when she is done she will go back home, but I think that I should make her my Luna. I will give it time. I am in no hurry and my honest opinion is that a pack doesn’t need a Luna. My mother is just my father's wife, she doesn’t have any role in pack business. Which is how it should be. She-wolves are supposed to provide heirs and that is it. “We won’t be seeing each other again. You were just an easy lay.” I walked into my bathroom and got in the shower. Mates is an overrated, outdated tradition. I don’t let anyone tell me what to do. How am I going to let fate make such decisions for me? It’s ludicrous that people still fall for it. I’d rather choose who I want to spend my time with. I’ve seen it countless times how people find their mates and then they change. Your mate makes you the best you can be. I like myself as is. I don’t need some girl to come here and change me. I got out of the shower and dried my hair. These days there is a lot of effort going into looking like you just fell out of bed. My Gamma had made the mistake of falling for his mate. Joshua Redick, we used to call him ‘d**k’. He was a lot of fun and he didn’t let any girl tell him what to do. Then he met her and now he is a domesticated dog. He is sickeningly in love with Alicia. She broke up our trio. Which just means I can never like her. If only all women could be like Aceline. I walked back into the room with just my towel on. The girl had left, which was good, but Birke looked uncomfortable. ”She was crying, you could have handled that better.” I dropped the towel, ignoring him as I pulled out some clothes to put on. “Man, I don’t want to see that.” He complained about me getting naked in front of him. I’m very comfortable with myself. “Then don’t look. I need to be hard on these girls. I’d rather say it like it is, then string them along only to break their heart more when the time finally comes. And the time will always come.” I pulled on the jeans and top. We’ll be shifting through applications. No point in putting too much effort into my appearance. “One day the time won’t come and you will fall in love. The moment you meet your mate everything will change.” Birke has clearly spent too much time with Joshua. “I don’t want to fall in love, so I won’t. If I ever met my mate, I would reject her. There is no point in stringing her along either. She is just a weakness that I don’t need. Anyway, I have Aceline. One day she will give me an heir and I can go on as I have without her caring. It’s the perfect arrangement. I know she wants power and I am willing to give her that as long as I can keep my freedom.” I walked to the door, opening it. Birke followed me out. We made our way to my father's office. He was sitting there with a bunch of printouts in front of him. He is too old school, save a damn tree and look at the applications on the computer. It is economical and environmentally friendly. There is a lot that I intend to change next year when I take over from him. I’ll be Alpha and he won’t have a say. We have a system. We look at their GPA. The ones above an 4.2 we throw out. There is no way you can have a 4.2 GPA and meet all the other requirements. We need people who will work hard and possibly fail in order for us to use them longer as servants, but we also don’t need slackers. From the ones left, we look at the pack participation. If there are less than 10, we throw them out. Usually, with them, we are only left with about twenty out of which we choose five, so we start to read the reference letters written by their Alpha’s. If it is anything generic, we throw it out. ”Listen to this one…” Birke said as he held up a thick application. “Dilara is the most involved member of our pack. She has dedicated her life to bettering the pack. She sets out to be available 100% of the time. When her mind is set she will commit fully. As an Alpha, I must say that losing her to another pack will have an effect on our everyday operations. As someone who knows her, I would say that it would be like losing one of my daughters or one of my limbs. She would be an excellent addition to your pack, something we are willing to give up as it is what she has been working for. Her happiness is what matters…that is just a tiny part of it. He wrote two pages. Here, take a look.” Birke handed it to me and I read the entire thing. The Alpha is definitely singing her praises. I don’t think I have ever heard any Alpha talk about a member of their pack in such high regard. I checked her GPA was almost 4.0. There is no way her GPA could be that high and she got such an excellent review. Her activity sheet must be just over 10. I turned the page and saw that her activity sheet went on for pages. “This girl can’t be real. She got an excellent review, she has a high GPA and she was involved in at least fifty pack activities. Didn’t she sleep at all in the last five years of her life?” I asked, handing the stack over to my father. “Looks like she was, the Luna’s assistant. She would know all the in and outs of running a pack. She could become a valuable asset. She would certainly work hard, but she won’t be a servant for too long. About three years and then she’ll have her business degree. If she doesn’t want to study anything else, she will be accepted into the pack, and even then you’ll be able to use her knowledge and expertise.” Business studies is a broad spectrum. She isn’t studying for a specialized occupation. She might want to get a second degree as well. My father is right. She could be invaluable. We’ll need to keep a close eye on her, she won’t be someone we would want to lose to someone else. Someone with ambition like hers is rare. She must be a dog. No way she could achieve all that and keep up her appearance. “Looks like Dilara Seren will be joining us.” After accepting her application, all the other ones were dull in comparison. My mind seemed to be hooked on her, what a prize she was.
