Ava's POV:
I grab the sheet and tear it, shredding it into a million pieces. I'm not dumb enough to walk around with my life plan - people can find it. Then, they will start bullying me, and I'm forced to slap them around until they learn not to step on anyone else's toes.
I guess I'm still a b***h, no matter what age I am.
Old habits are hard to change.
One class after another, and I feel incredibly grateful not to run into Luke again.
I smile, seeing Trevon standing against the lockers with his little geeky friends, "Trev! Trev!" I shouted, rushing towards him. Everyone looks at me, and the smiles drop from their faces. I tucked the rebellious strand behind my ear, "Want to have lunch together, bro?"
Everyone was quiet, staring at me.
I batted my lashes, ignoring the awkward tension, "Aren't you going to introduce me to your friends Trev?"
Finally, I turned towards the other two guys, and my smile dropped when it met with a familiar pair of brown eyes. He tilts his head ever so slightly before the smile widens, but he doesn't say anything. We continued doing a stare-off until Trevon got uncomfortable." Uh, Ben and Eli...This is my twin sister...Ava," he replies.
That explains why Eli knows my name.
Ben and Eli continue to stare at me.
Trevon grabbed my wrist and pulled me away from them. "What are you doing?" he whispers.
"I'm asking if you want to have lunch together." I peek past Trevon. "Maybe with your friends too." I wave my hand.
Ben and Eli return my wave like robots.
Trevon pulls me back, "I don't know what kind of game you're pulling, but stop it."
"I'm not playing any games. I...just want us to have lunch together."
Trevon taps his finger against his chin, puckering his lips as his eyes roam towards the ceiling. "The answer is...no."
"Why not?"
"Because I'm a f*****g loser, remember?"
"Says who?" I ask.
"You!"
"What?"
"You said I was a loser in freshman year and threatened to shave my head if I ever sat with you during lunch," he responds bitterly. "Now, if you excuse me, this loser must go with his fugly friends," he snarls, reminding me of the words I told him.
I swallow, "I didn't mean it."
He rolls his eyes, "Sure you didn't," he said, walking away from me.
I stood there, staring at his back while it slowly disappeared down the crowded hallway. I didn't know what to feel, but the discomforting twist in my stomach suggests that I need to get my crap together.
"Bye!" Eli shouted, waving at me.
I smile and return his wave. "Bye," I mumbled underneath my breath.
With my head hung low, I walk down the hall. I decided to walk in the opposite direction, despite my next class being on the other side. I supposed it's my fault; after all, I was the one who told him to stay away.
"Look at that loser," Winnie snickered.
I turned around, seeing Trevon walking down the hallway without any shoes with two of his friends. Everyone burst out laughing when he turned around with the word - loser - spray paint across his shirt.
Trevon's eyes shined when he saw me, and I turned my head. He rushed towards me. "Av, mind calling mom? I lost my ph-"
"Av...is this, your brother?" Winnie giggled, while everyone else stared at me.
My cheeks turned red.
Trevon grabbed my arm, "A-Av?"
Everyone continued staring at me, waiting for my response.
I snatched my arm away, feeling my chest tightening. "This f*****g loser?"
Trevon frowned, rubbing his arm.
"Yeah, he's my brother...Probably adopted, though." I forced out a laugh, and everyone followed along.
Trevon pulled me aside, "Av..what are you doing? Why are you so mean? This isn't you."
Everyone was still staring at us.
"Look, stay away from me. Take you and your fugly friends as far away as possible." I took a step forward, "Pretend like you don't know me."
Tears brimmed in his eyes, "Av."
"You're messing with my reputation."
"But...mom and dad told us to have lunch togeth-"
"I swear Trev if you try to sit with me during lunch. I'll shave your head while you sleep."
Trevon took a step back and turned around. He ran down the hallway with his friends behind him. I bit my lower lips, clenching onto the books in my hands, seeing the tears dripping down from his face.
"God, those guys are fugly."
"I can't believe that sissy is your brother."
Shaking off the tightening sensation, I continued walking towards the cafeteria. Entering the room, short glances dragged my way as my eyes scanned the area.
I found it.
My regular table with the jocks and cheerleaders, beside the window - it has the best lighting.
There was Winnie, Mary, and Sarah, who was waving me over. Luke's eyes met mine, and I noticed there was an empty seat beside him.
I rather die than eat beside him.
When I saw Trevon sitting in the back corner, I was determined. I'm going to get back into his good side no matter what. I curled my thumb inside the strap of my backpack and past the so-called popular table, leaving them with pure confusion.
Standing in front of Trevon, everyone was staring at me. "May I sit here?" I asked.
Silence....in the cafeteria.
"Y-You want to s-s-sit here?" Ben asked.
I nod, "Please?"
Eli scooted over, causing the person beside him to fall. He patted the seat next to him. Hesitantly, I sit down while everyone stares at me. "Hi...I'm Ava," I introduced myself.
"We know," Eli responds.
Ben took out his inhaler and placed it on his mouth, inhaling a deep breath.
I place my hand on top of his, "Are you okay?"
His hand began shaking, and it was very sweaty, "Y-You're touching me."
I remove my hand, "Oh, I'm sorry."
Ben shook his head, "No, don't stop. I like it"
I smile, "Umm, okay."
"You're pretty."
"He hasn't talked to a girl in a very long time," Eli said.
"Will you be my girlfriend?" Ben suddenly screamed then slapped his hands over his mouth.
I chuckled, "I'm honored, but I'm not looking for a boyfriend."
"Ah, is it because of your break up?"
"Breakup?" I asked.
When did I even have a boyfriend?
Eli nodded, an unwavering grin on his face. "Yeah, with Luke in the hallway this morning. Everyone is talking about it."
I laughed, "No, Luke, isn't my boyfriend."
"Then, what is he?"
"Her f**k buddy," Trevon responded bitterly before I can even say anything. Tucking my lips above my teeth, I stayed quiet.
At that moment, I never felt more ashamed of myself as everyone stares at me with what seemed to be...disgust?
I cleared my throat and straightened my back. "So, what are you all talking about?"
Silence.
"This movie we're going to this weekend," Eli was the first to respond.
"Cool. What movie?" I asked.
"Well-"
Ben nudged Eli's waist, preventing him from speaking. "Dude. She doesn't want to hear about that."
Eli scratched his head.
"I do," I responded.
Trevon nudged a brow, "No, you don't."
I nodded, "I do."
"Aquaman," Eli said with a small smile. "Want to join?"
Ben and Trevon gave him a blank look.
"I would love to," I said quickly before Trevon can respond.
Eli smiled, "Great."
Silently, we began eating our lunches until disturbing heels clicking ran through the cafeteria.
"Hello," Winnie said while tapping her heels, dark hair swaying to the side of her face sticking onto her red lipsticks. "Mind if I steal Av from you boys for a second?"
"Y-Yes," Ben responded, almost choking on his burrito.
She twinkles her nose with a dazzling smile on her lips. "Awesome," she said, pulling me up towards the other side. "What the f**k are you doing?" she whispered.
"Hanging out with my brother," I responded.
Winnie chuckled, "Wow. You must really hit your head, babe."
I folded my arms, "There is nothing wrong with a sister wanting to hang out with her brother at lunch."
Winnie tugged against my shirt, "People are talking Av."
"About?"
"How you dress? Girl! You look like a beggar," she whispered. "Plus, you're hanging out with losers!"
"Watch it!" I snapped, "That's my brother and his friends, and frankly, I give zero f***s about what others think about." I brushed off her hand and walked away.
Walking back towards Trevon's table, my eyes met with Luke. He sat there, wearing his oversized football jacket as his hands clenched together. His lips thinned, broad shoulders slumping as his eyes refused to leave my body. I threw a hand on the side of my face and continued walking. "Not during my second chance. You will not mess up my second chance." I chanted until I reached the table.
The whole day rushed past without a single disturbance. I stood at my locker and clasped my hands together "Thank you for looking out for me," I whispered to the ceiling. "Please, continue leading me down the right path - Amen."
I closed my locker and leaped back, feeling my heart skip a beat. "Holy f**k!"
Luke leaned against the lockers with his thick arms folded across his chest. "I didn't know you're a Catholic girl now." I rolled my eyes and grabbed the other strap of the backpack. Turning my body away from him, I walked towards detention. "You're ignoring me again."
I stop walking, granting him a languid side glance. "Hi."
He releases a huff of breath, "Wow. I must have done something wrong to piss you off to this extent." I guess my emotions were too obvious, then again, I didn't intend to hide it. Perhaps, this bitchy attitude will push him further, maybe off a cliff.
"No, it's not you. It's me." I dived into one of the most classical yet cliche lines in history.
Entering the classroom, the teacher was already present. I stood there, staring at Luke, who stared back at me.
"What are you two doing? Sit," the teacher said.
I continue staring at Luke, who blinks down at me. "Go on. Sit." I said, taking a step back so he can go first. Once he chooses his seat, I'm going to take the one furthest away from him,
He grins, sliding back, "Ladies first."
I laughed, "For your information. I'm no lady."
"Makee! Parker! Move them feet! I don't have all day!" the teacher screamed before pulling out his timer. Detention is generally an hour or maybe more depending on what you did to get you laid in the horrible after school hours.
I glare at Luke, who refuses to move. Not wanting to gain another day of detention, I walked towards the window and took my seat. Unexpectedly, Luke slid beside me, placing his backpack on top of the table. I unzipped my bag and took out my books. "You're studying...on the first day of school?"
"No talking-" You tell him mean teacher. "and no cell phones." He starts the timer, then sits back down.
Detention wasn't as bad as I expected since the teacher told us not to utter a single word. I manage to read several chapters of my biology book - nerdy, I know - but I better prepare. Plus, my biology teacher is infamous for giving out surprise quizzes in the first week of school. Do well, and you land on her approval side. Don't do well, and she will call you for the rest of the school year.
I was on the did not do so well side.
The only downside is Luke's presence and the fact that he seems to stare at me the whole time. The creepy part is that he wasn't even blinking.
When the timer went off, I shoved everything into my backpack and ran out. "Nice to know you like spending time with me!" the teacher screamed.
My eyes rushed around the nearly empty hallway. Taking a step back, I rushed towards the nearest girl's bathroom. Unfortunately, Luke grabbed my hood and pulled me back, potentially choking me "What are you doing?" I screamed one word at a time as I reached for the restroom that somehow seemed so far away.
I sigh, knowing he wouldn't leave me alone. My tongue pokes out, moistening the dry layers. I believe playing the ignoring game would work, but it didn't. Then, I alter into my b***h mood, praying he would get the hint. Thinking about it, maybe, I'll try a different route. "Parker. I know."
"Know what?"
"You're f*****g other girls."
He scoffed, "So, what? Who I f**k don't matter to you."
I nodded, "That's true. It doesn't." I began walking down the hall.
"Are you f*****g those losers?" His scream echoed in the hallway.
I stopped, running my fingers through my hair while lazily twisting the upper half of my body to him, "Who I f**k don't matter to you."
