They walked down the passage side by side but, as it happened, encountered no one. The old woman was busy in the kitchen and with her was a young girl, who she had told Jabina was expected to come in later to wash up. The landlord was still serving drinks in the public part of the inn. They reached the yard and now the Duke, looking round quickly, saw an open cart such as farmers used drawn by one horse which was tethered to a post.
