“What are you doing here?” I ask with little effort.
I don’t have much energy since my mate died. I felt the moment Ava’s soul left her body. I fell to the ground, clutching my head and screaming. My mother was soon beside me, trying to soothe my pain. But not even Mother’s magic could save me from the heartbreak this time.
I screamed for hours until Father came and sent me to sleep. But, in dreams, I saw Ava, older than I remember and twice as beautiful. I could not put a number on her age in my dream, but she was now a woman. Ava was still short, but she had grown into her body. She called my name and reached for me. But as I moved to take her in my arms, she vanished. I awoke with a start and even more pain in my once-dead heart.
