CHAPTER IVThe scorpion waited patiently for the elevator at the end of the corridor to ascend to the tenth floor. He looked neither to the right, nor to the left. There was a withdrawn, profoundly thoughtful expression on his face, and even when the elevator door swung open and he stepped into the narrow cage and was carried rapidly to the street his aspect of intense preoccupation did not change.
