Chapter Twenty - I may be in trouble...

1168 Words
Kylan  The last couple of days after my weekend with Nola, I had been in a great mood. Unfortunately, I won’t see her again until Friday, since we are both busy. I am currently sitting in a conference room, waiting for everyone to join. I am early for our meeting. I dreaded it because it would take hours, but these things happen with new businesses. Why I showed up half an hour early, I don’t know.  I take a sip of my coffee and bring my phone from my pocket. I hadn’t heard from Nola since yesterday afternoon. She said she would text me last night, but she didn’t. I am a little annoyed, but I am slightly hypocritical since I haven’t reached out to her either. But that is going to change! I open a text to her.  Is there a reason I haven’t heard from you, kitten? Are you OK? X We usually talk every night, even just for a few minutes. I hope everything was OK. I set my phone down, glancing back and forth at it. Five minutes later, Nola texts back.  Hey, you, sorry. I had a bad, stressful day yesterday, and when I got home, I went straight to bed. I am OK, though X  What does she mean by a bad day? I swear if anyone has said or done something to her, they will have me to deal with! I am overly protective of her, Nola, in a way I shouldn’t be. I couldn’t help it. She is such a sweet soul, unlike anyone I have met before. I am still trying to get used to having her in life. It has been a long time since I have spent so much time with one person. There is a chance I may be in trouble.  Bad day? What happened? Do I need to kick someone’s ass cos I will? You should have called me, and I would have come over X  Yes, I didn’t finish until close to midnight last night, but I would still have gone over if she had asked. It isn’t important! It is over with. Thank you, that is very sweet, but we both had late nights and early mornings. X I would still have come by. What time do you finish tonight? X  I have a lot of work tonight, but I can finish early if she is free.  I work until nine X  I can be done by then. Maybe she can come to mine, and I can cook us a late dinner. She can spend the night if she likes.  How about I pick you up and you can come to mine. I will prepare us some dinner, you can stay over, and I will drop you off at school tomorrow on the way to the office? X  I wanted to see her sooner rather than later. I hate to admit it, but I have kind of missed her the last couple of days.  That would be nice. Are you sure you don’t have other things to do? X  I am positive, kitten. Pick you up at nine? X  OK, sounds good. I will see you then. I am heading to the next class. Have a good day X  See you then, sweetness X  I left it at the and put my phone away. I finished my coffee, and soon enough, people came in one by one. Richard took his seat next to me.  “Hello, Kylan, how are you? Did you have a nice weekend?” he asks.  I hadn’t seen him since last week.  “I had a good weekend, thanks. You?” I reply. I wonder how he would respond if I told him I was with his daughter at the weekend. I am sure he wouldn’t be too pleased and possibly kill me.  “Quiet.” He replies, and the conversation ends there because the meeting began. At least I have something to look forward to after today, seeing Nola.  *** I had just pulled up outside of Nola’s work. She had texted me the address earlier. I was surprised to find out she works in a bar. I didn’t think it would be her thing. I keep an eye on the door, and she comes out, looking around for me. I flash my lights, and she turns her attention in my direction. She rushes over and climbs in. I sensed she was stressed again.  “Nola, what is going on? You seem overly stressed again.” I ask, concerned.  “My boss is an asshole! He thinks he is some big shot who can treat his staff like crap.” She snaps.  My fists tighten on the wheel. “What did he do?” I ask through gritted teeth.  “It doesn’t matter. Can we just get out of here, please?” she sighs.  “Nola, what did he do?” I ask again.  “He just treats his staff terribly, especially the females, either that or he is trying to hit on us. He is a creep.”  I undo my seatbelt and reach for the door handle. I will go sort the fucker out. Nola grabs me, and I turn to look at her.  “Where are you going?” she questions.  “To go and deal with him….”  “No! Leave it! He isn’t worth it. I can handle myself. We all can.” She says softly, her eyes begging me not to.  “Fine! But if he continues, then tell me, OK? I will deal with him. You should get another job.” I respond firmly.  “OK, but only if we leave now.” she bargains.  I take a few deep breaths and nod. I start the car and get on the way to mine. Nola rests back with her eyes closed, taking a few deep breaths. I extend my hand over, resting it on her knee and squeezing it. Out of the corner of my eyes, I see her looking at me, smiling. My outburst didn’t seem to scare her off, so that is a good thing. I hate sleazes like her boss seems to be. I wish one of them would slap him and remind him he has no right to treat them the way he does. “What is for dinner? I am so hungry, and please tell me you have wine?” she questions.  “Chicken fajitas with a side of tortilla chips. And yes, I always have wine in the house, and vodka, beer and whatever else you can think of.” I laughed.  “Oh, yummy. Good because I need a large glass after my day.”  “You can have whatever you want, angel.” I smile.  Nola reaches over and kisses my cheek, thanking me. I will make her feel better and help her forget her lousy couple of days. Good food, wine, a bath if she wants, relaxation and anything else she needs.
