As soon as Iris arrived home, she instantly headed toward her bedroom. She laid down on the bed, sat down, and laid down again. The process was repeated a few times, but her mind still couldn’t rest easy.
Sighing, she stood up and sneaked through the window. That wicked Elder Martin had suggested to station patrol guards in her home yesterday and they just started to work tonight. The reason was for her safety, but she knew better that they didn’t want her to run away.
However, how could this minor problem stop her from going out?
She transformed into her wolf form and began to dash through the woods. In no time, she arrived at a place filled with gray fog.
The scene in front of her was such a contrast to the sight behind her. She looked like she was at an intersection between two worlds.
Dead trees were everywhere, and gray fog concentrated more in some places, and the deeper it was, the more thick the gray fog was. Iris took a step inside, her senses alert.
“Got ya,” she muttered as soon as she spotted a movement in the bushes.
Still in her wolf form, she clawed at the creature with red eyes that had been watching her for a while. Her claw grazed its hard skin, and the creature was quick for its size.
But it couldn’t run from her. The creature looked like a rhinoceros, but with a longer tail and a pointed horn. As soon as she got near, it retaliated with its horned head, aiming toward her much smaller body. She evaded and jumped to a tree branch.
Iris nimbly jumped near it and smashed her body against it, causing the creature to bounce back. The intense fight was happening as it tried to stab her approaching figure.
The weakness was located in its stomach, where its defense was weaker; the skin wasn’t as thick as other parts. Its strongest force was in its horn, where it could pierce even a metal block.
Iris didn’t let go of the chance to smash her paw against its stomach as hard as she could. Its horn was only a few inches from her face when she was in the process of doing so, but she successfully jumped up to evade it.
Blood spurted from its stomach and she gazed down coldly as the creature took its last breath.
She hunted a few more demonic creatures to vent her anger. Being in the situation where she couldn’t control her own fate frustrated her.
Those creatures were the pollution of this world besides the rogue. They appeared from God-knows-where and invaded the world, or so from what she had read from a book in the pack’s library. They disturbed the peace of the packs because they often attack the werewolves.
Iris went to a creek and washed her hand in it. The blood was instantly washed by the small current. After she cleaned herself, she sprinted toward a particular direction in the woods.
She arrived at the small hut made from bamboo. Without the slightest hesitation, she opened the door and sauntered in.
“Old man?”
She called, but there was no response.
Iris shook her head in pity and picked a small paper from the table. She wrote something and put it back on the table. With one last look, she exited the place, transforming back to her wolf form, and took a run in the woods again.
This time, she headed toward her pack. She didn’t know whether they had realized that she had gone or not, but she didn’t care.
Danny had secretly filled her in about the story when Selia encountered her mate. There was nothing too special about it, and he just described that they had an instant connection. Selia also seemed like someone who wasn’t too enthusiastic about anything except for increasing her strength, so she kinda behaved like Iris in some way.
No wonder that the guy didn’t show much suspicion about her. However, with no doubt that he might have some conjecture. So, if she wanted to convince him, she should try a bit harder.
Just as she was about to jump above a low tree branch, she suddenly sensed something was wrong. She evaded to the right, which caused her to crash into a tree. Balancing herself, she shivered, then stood up on alert.
The figure that went for her was also a fellow werewolf, and she wasn’t sure if it was a rogue or not. Inwardly frowning in doubt, she tried to communicate with him, “Do you have some grudges against me?”
Iris pupils constricted when her question was immediately answered, with the opponent’s figure lunging toward her instead. The moonlight was too dim and she couldn’t see things clearly because they were at the periphery of the demon territory. Gray fog was everywhere.
She jumped to a tree branch, trying to make sense of the figure. However, she was annoyed to find that as if he could read her mind; he followed her movement.
Her paw swiped right at him, and he took a few steps backward. She narrowed her eyes thoughtfully.
The lapse took a split second, and he immediately retaliated against her. Her pupils constricted, and she cursed herself for being distracted in the middle of a fight.
She winced as his paw grazed her shoulder. Jumping down, she frowned slightly at the throbbing pain.
“Are you a mute? Answer me if you can understand.” She still tried to communicate with him, but to no avail. She still didn’t get any response.
That figure was dangerous, very dangerous.
However, she could sense that he was not in a murderous state. His advances toward her were done more out of curiosity. Still, her heart palpitated wildly whenever he was coming toward her.
Because she didn’t know if she would accidentally trigger his murderous intention. This figure was strong, and she knew that if he had any intention of killing her, she would be lying dead now.
“s**t!” she cursed inside her head, racking her brain as to how to escape from this situation.
Besides the existence of rogue werewolves and demonic creatures, there was something that was more dangerous; which was the both of them combined.
Some rogue werewolves underwent rare mutations where they attained demon characteristics. Hence, it made their body bigger, more robust and stronger. The cost was their consciousness; they could only act on instinct.
The realization brought some despair in Iris’ heart. Was she unlucky to meet one now?
The creature was now watching her coldly and didn’t make any move. She took a deep breath and tried to dash as fast as she could through the woods.
There were only the sounds of her paws hitting the ground as she moved. She ran faster, thinking that he didn’t want to leave the demon territory. However, just as she was about to heave a sigh of relief, something was coming from her right side.
Gritting her teeth, she willed her body to stop. She was a few inches away as his claw made a deep mark on a gigantic tree beside her.
She breathed hard, and a crazy idea struck her. If she were to go down tonight, she wouldn’t go down without a fight. With that in mind, she began to launch an attack on him.
Surprisingly, this time, he didn’t evade. His eyes followed her movement as he let her claw at his shoulder. She thought that it would trigger his bloodthirsty instinct, but he still didn’t move and only watched her.
Baffled, Iris also stopped and inspected. The moonlight shone brighter than before, and with her eyes wide open, she witnessed a shocking transformation in front of her.
The gigantic wolf changed into someone she couldn’t be more familiar with.
Rion.
And now he had his eyebrows raised and a shoulder that was dripping with blood.
“Hey, little wolf.” The same playful tone, but there was something else in his eyes that made her heart palpitate.
A word popped up in her mind; she was doomed. “Shit.”
