Chapter Twelve

1130 Words
Alastair's POV: Preston moved to get between us with his hands up in surrender. “I would very much like it if you didn’t do that. And it seems like we have much to discuss between your faction and my pack.” “There is nothing to be said,” Ruth spoke sternly. “You know that isn’t true, Ruth,” Preston responded. “If you really are the hunter that has been attacking the different supernatural groups, then you have painted a large target on your back. Do you really think you can protect this whole town when those you’ve angered descend upon it?” “I’ve been doing this for years. You think I don’t have a plan in place?” “What about Anita,” I asked her gently. The rage and fury rose within her. I could see it in her eyes. “You keep her name out of your mouth!” “Can you confidently say that you can protect your sister this time? You can protect her from all those you pissed off throughout the years?” Ruth’s arm started shaking, so she raised her left arm to stabilize her pistol. However, it didn’t completely work to stop her shaking. I walked out from behind my alpha and stepped closer to her. Ruth changed from aiming at my head to my heart, yet I still approached her until her pistol was pressed into my chest. “Let me help you, my mate. I only wish to keep you and your loved ones safe. Please?” "Ruth," Clover spoke softly as she walked closer to us. She pulled out a pendant from under her dress and pressed it to her throat. A rune marking glowed from the center of the stone. Ruth then pulled out a matching pendant and did the same thing. Clover started to speak again. However, no one could understand what she was saying. Ruth's POV: Clover pulled out the stone necklace she had made for us to speak about private matters in nonprivate settings. If anyone tried to listen in, it would sound like a foreign language to them. "I think we should take his offer. The vampires have discovered our general location." "What about the girls? And our secret base? Should we really let them in on that?" "I think they already know about the girls, but we can keep the base a secret for now. We will tell them more information if they can prove themselves to us." I let out a sigh because I knew she was right, but this wasn't just my choice to make. "Put it to a vote." Clover escorted the others far enough away to talk to them as I put my pendant back under my top. My eyes then went back to Alastair, who was stupid enough to press his chest against the business end of my pistol. He knew that I was packing silver bullets, right? So why was he being so reckless? "That was an interesting trinket; it's a magical item, right?" "Yeah, invented by Clover herself." He flashed me a half smile that made my heart thump faster. Did my enemy have to be so damn sexy? "You surround yourself with good people, Ruth. I'm sure they all want what is best for you." "We share the same goal, nothing more." He chuckled a bit before tilting his head to the side. "Are you sure that's all?" I was ready to kick his ass when Clover returned with the others. "We came to an agreement. We'll accept your help." I put my pistol away before looking at his alpha. "What now, alpha?" Alastair’s leader stepped forward in front of his gamma. "If you don't mind, I would like to talk to you about our partnership tonight if possible. You can even bring someone to accompany you if that will make you feel more at ease." “I think you should bring Stephon with you,” suggested Clover. I shook my head no in response. “He needs to help Becky calm down after what happened. I have a feeling of why that song set her off, but I won’t assume. However, if I’m right, she has years of recovery ahead of her.” I let out a sigh while pinching the bridge of my nose. “How about Ox then? I’m sure you wouldn’t mind him escorting you.” Once again, I shook my head no. “You are pretty dead set on not going with me, aren’t you,” I inquired with a smirk. “If the vampires came out this far to look for the women, they might return to attack. You need your best witch to help fortify the defenses.” “Same reason Ox needs to be there. He is our heaviest hitter.” I looked at who was left of the group that came out to help search for Becky. That’s when I saw the petite blonde with a pixie cut standing amongst my ranks. “Tinkerbell, you’ll come with me. The rest head back with Clover and set up rotations to guard headquarters. Never know when our little friend might be back with company.” Tinkerbell stood beside me as the others left to return to the club. The Alpha nodded his head to his warriors, and they started walking back toward their territory. Alastair tried to walk next to me, but I moved so that Tinkerbell was between the two of us. The last thing I was in the mood for was dealing with a flirtatious wolf. Once at the border, we were greeted by the pack’s patrol. Their Alpha talked to them first before we proceeded. Turning around, I caught Alastair talking to the same patrol members and pointing at me. “It's rude to point,” I snapped at him. Alastair replied with one of his handsome smiles. I wondered how many women he won over with his stupid grin. I shook my head before continuing to the pack house. Once inside, the Alpha led us to his office. “Please, have a seat,” he offered while motioning to the two chairs in front of the desk. Tinkerbell took the one on the right, and I took the left. “My name is Preston, and this is my Beta Gregory. You already know my Gamma.” “Yes, we've had the not-so-pleasure of meeting.” I saw Alastair flinch out of the corner of my eye. “Though if you recall, this isn't our first meeting. I kicked you out of my club.” Preston cleared his throat before speaking. “Yes, I remember that encounter. And since then, we learned why you have such feelings towards our kind.”
