Josiah
“So, what do you think?” I asked as I leaned back in my seat. Zack and Mato looked rather thoughtful, and I couldn’t blame them. They had stopped by to see how I was doing, and I hurriedly filled them in on what had been going on in my life since their wedding.
“I think you need to approach this delicately,” Zack remarked. “The Polis’ aren’t unreasonable people. In fact, they are helpful and loyal,”
“Right,” I huffed out, once again annoyed. “So, they just don’t like me then,”
“No, I don’t think it’s even about you,” Zack continued. “Amani is right that they have always been close. They are the type of family that does everything together. This doesn’t surprise me. Amani has always been their little girl,”
“Yeah, but she isn’t little anymore,” Mato softly pointed out.
“I’m sure they know that, but she will always be their baby. They never had any more children, so they clearly felt protective towards her. Which is understandable given the circumstances,”
“What does that mean?” I questioned Zack.
“It means you are an abomination. A hybrid. Half wolf, half-witch, and let’s not forget that you did come in guns blazing!”
“I thought you said this isn’t even about me!” I exclaimed.
“Ok, so maybe it is a little about you,” Zack admitted sheepishly. “But it’s mostly about Amani,”
“So, what do I do? I don’t want to cause issues between her and her family,” I complained softly, desperately.
“All you can do is treat her right and continue to show them that you aren’t a threat,” Mato's suggestion is almost identical to what Grayson and Sierna suggested. That didn’t mean it would be easy.
“Maybe you can invite them over for dinner or something?” Zack then suggested and I froze. Could I do that? “I mean, let them into your home so that they can get to know you,”
“It’s not a terrible idea,” I said as I contemplated what I could do. “I’ll ask Amani what she thinks,”
“You do that, Josiah,” Zack said. The rest of the morning is spent gossiping about other residents of Skaydal, but at the back of my mind, I was thinking about what I could do to win over Amani’s parents. I wanted their approval. When Zack and Mato finally left, I headed back inside to grab my phone.
“Hi Josiah,” Amani’s voice is like a caress, and I shiver as I sink down on the couch.
“Hello Amani,”
“I’m sorry about last night,” her whispered words warmed my heart, and I cannot help but smile.
“It’s quite all right. In fact, Zack and Mato were just here and they gave me an idea,”
“Oh yeah?” I can hear the curiosity in her voice.
“They suggested that I invite you and your family over for dinner. A peace offering of sorts and a chance for them to come into my home and see who I am,” I explained as my heart rate picked up. The idea of them coming into my home isn’t ideal but necessary.
“Oh! That is…a splendid idea!”
“Really?” I am unsure if it is a splendid idea, but of course, I am willing to do just about anything for my mate.
“Yes, it could be just what they need to stop with their s**t,” I chuckled at that and relaxed further against the couch. “When? Tonight?”
“How about tomorrow?” I asked. “That way I can prepare,”
“Ok, yeah…do you want to ask them or shall I?” I thought about that for a moment and then I decided that if I am going to do this then I needed to man up and do this.
“No, I will invite them,” I remarked firmly. “Now what types of food do they enjoy?” I spent the next ten minutes listening to the long list of things Amani and her family enjoy and I took mental note of all the possibilities. By the time we say goodbye to each other, I have a clear plan in my mind. It’s almost perfect but I’ll have to do some serious shopping. Not that it bothers me. With a clear indication of what I needed to do, I headed out and got into my truck. I have to admit to myself that I am nervous as I pulled up outside of Amani’s house. My decision to invite them now is step one. I parked across the road before I walked up to their front door and knocked. I’m hoping Amani will answer but when I see it’s her mother, I’m tempted to just make a run for it.
“Josiah!” she exclaimed in surprise. “Amani isn’t here,”
“Hello Kathy,” I greeted her casually. “Actually, I wanted to stop by and invite you all over for dinner tomorrow night,” her eyes are wide with surprise and I’m not sure if it is a good thing or not. “I thought that maybe we could enjoy a meal together and get to know each other better,” Kathy is hesitant, and I don’t blame her, but this needs to happen.
“I’ll have to speak to my husband,” she finally responded and my whole body tensed up. “But I think it is a lovely idea, thank you, Josiah,” I relaxed slightly but I knew I would have to wait for their final decision. “I’m sure we will be there, but I’ll get Gavin to call you when he gets back,”
“Thank you, Kathy,” I said before I hurriedly rushed down the driveway and climbed back into my truck. However, just as I was about to turn the key for the engine, I spotted Gavin pulling into his driveway. Kathy was still standing by the door, and I wasn’t sure if I should stick around or not. Gavin didn’t notice me immediately, but as he got closer to Kathy, she pointed over to me and his glare is more than harsh. I quickly turned on the engine and made a speedy getaway. They’ll call me.
