Josiah: Hello Amani
I stared at the message I had sent my mate and sighed. I had the date planned and now it was time for me to ask her out. After my conversation with Grayson and Sierna, I actually felt pretty good. I had a bad feeling that Amani’s family wasn’t happy that I am her mate, which meant that I had my work cut out for me. And I am more than prepared to fight for my mate. The vibration of my phone dragged me out of my thoughts as I quickly checked to see if it was Amani.
Amani: Hey Josiah
I smiled as I leaned back against the sofa. She responded! I felt giddy as I quickly typed out my thoughts about the possibility of taking her out on a date.
Josiah: Are you free on Saturday? I would like to take you out on a date.
The message showed as read and my palms suddenly felt sweaty as I stared at the screen. When those three little dots pop up, I cannot stop myself from smiling like a lovesick fool. Is it always going to feel like this?
Amani: What time on Saturday?
I frowned as I read her message. What time? I had no idea what time and a sense of panic came over me as I jumped up from the sofa. I didn’t have a time planned. I wasn’t even sure what the hell I was doing, and she wanted to know what time.
Amani: I have an appointment on Saturday morning which should be finished by 12. Is that going to be a problem?
I felt myself relax slightly as I read her message.
Josiah: No problem. Can I pick you up after your appointment?
I hit send and then I waited. Once again, it showed as read and almost immediately those three dots appeared. Should I have just called her?
Amani: That sounds great! I cannot wait! Where are you taking me?
I eased back down onto the sofa. The small panic attack had now subsided and I felt like I was back in control.
Josiah: It is a surprise.
The message showed as read but as I stared at my phone those three little dots didn’t appear. When she didn’t respond, my mind went crazy, and I decided that the best option would be to simply call her. I hit dial on her contact number and waited as I listened to the ring.
“Josiah?”
“Hello Amani,” I said as I did my best to relax.
“What’s up?” she then asked casually, and I couldn’t help but smile.
“Is it ok that it is a surprise?” I questioned and I couldn’t believe how nervous I felt. This was, after all, my first time doing something like this. I didn’t have a history of romance or wooing anyone.
“Of course! Sorry, I am busy getting everything together for my appointment tomorrow,” she hurriedly explained, and finally I relaxed. She was simply busy. It had nothing to do with me.
“Oh,” I said with a sigh. “Shall I pick you up at your house?” I then asked.
“Yeah, I think you need to meet my parents,” she whispered, and I frowned. I knew her parents might not approve but her whispered words confirmed my earlier suspicion.
“Ok,” I wasn’t even sure how to respond to that and I realized that I would have to knock on Grayson’s door once again for advice. Or possibly Sierna.
“They are just worried,” Amani informed me, and I nodded, even though she couldn’t see me. “I just want them to like you,” she added, and I sighed.
“How can I make them like me?” I asked curiously. I had no idea how these things worked.
“Just be yourself,” she said.
“Ok,”
“I’ll see you tomorrow,”
“Yes, tomorrow,” I said, and then she hung up. I set my phone next to me and sighed. How was I supposed to impress her parents? My arrival in Skaydal may have been with bad intentions but everyone else seemed to have accepted my presence here. It would seem that Gavin isn’t as accepting. Or is it simply because I am mated with his daughter? Obviously, she wanted her parents to like me, and so did I, but what if they didn’t? Would that affect our relationship before we’ve even had a chance to be together? That thought alone gave me chills. I hopped off the sofa and grabbed my phone before I closed my eyes and teleported just outside of the packhouse.
“Josiah!” Grayson exclaimed in surprise at my sudden appearance. Grayson and Sierna were seated on the porch, and I threw them a sheepish smile as I shrugged.
“Sorry to just pop in,” I said as casually as I could. “I just…I need some advice,”
“Come take a seat,” Sierna insisted as she waved over at the open chair. I didn’t waste any time as I joined them.
“What’s going on?” Grayson asked and I gave them a rundown of my conversation with Amani. When I was done, silence fell between us as they thought about my dilemma.
“All you can do is be yourself,” Sierna slowly remarked, and while that was exactly what Amani had said, I wasn’t sure how to be myself without being weird.
“Be honest,” Grayson added. “Ultimately, Amani is old enough to make her own decisions and while it would be great for her to have her parent’s approval, it isn’t up to them,” he continued. He made a good point, but I didn’t know Amani all that well yet. Surely it wouldn’t be my place to make her choose between me and her parents, right?
