Translation into modern English of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle entry for 855 AD:A.D. 855. This year the heathen men for the first time remained over winter in the Isle of Sheppey. The same year King Aethelwulf registered a TENTH of his land over all his kingdom for the honour of God and for his own everlasting salvation.
There were several copies of Bede’s Ecclesiastical History—each one had additions that applied to their own experiences. This extract is one of several versions—I have seen 3 (2 digitised copies of the originals) and each one had its own spelling for the same words. The extract here was from the oldest copy and it is an Old English translation of Bede’s original and was written in the first half of the 11th century in round minuscules. It is now held at Corpus Christi College and is known as MS 041.
