The stalking was a slow, awkward process. Cahil could not tell the direction his foe was in, merely the distance by how strongly he received an impression of the other’s mind. If he walked a given path and the feeling faded, he knew he was going the wrong way; if the strength increased, he knew he was headed correctly. He was aided in this curious search by the enemy itself, which seemed equally intent on stalking him. As both sides progressed along their search the pace accelerated.
