James Sage had worked hard and the money from his horse sales helped make his farm one of the best in the western wilderness. Before he died, he had cleared nearly all of the four-hundred acres. He, along with James, Jr., had helped all the other sons start their own farms or businesses. He had provided large dowries so each of his six daughters could find good husbands. He was a good neighbor, always ready to lend a helping hand. Many of his neighbors, who had fallen on hard times, would awaken to find a fresh ham or a chicken hanging on their porches.
