Chapter 9The Latter Years of James Sage
As James had portended, after William was born in May, 1800, there were other children. Ezekial was born in May, 1803, but died in infancy, and was laid to rest, with his brother John who had died in 1782, in the family cemetery overlooking the creek. After Betsy was born in April, 1805, in all the couple had borne fourteen children of their own.
Shortly after Ezekial had died, Lovi was seen with a newborn who was being called Martin Sage. There were, at that time, three Sage girls of child-bearing age living at home. As was the custom, the neighbors gossiped for the first few months and then all was forgotten. Martin would be raised as if he were a son until he married Susannah Wright in May, 1825.
