Joel"s slowed his car to a crawl as he got near the end of Piper"s street. The police had most of the road blocked off and what wasn"t blocked off by police cars was crowded with spectators who were spilling into the road.
As Joel crawled past the scene of the crime, Scout was at full attention. Joel briefly scanned the crowd, looking for Piper as he drove by. He caught sight of her mothers and the two older men he had seen at the café with Piper the day before. But he didn"t see Piper, and he felt a twinge of worry he couldn"t explain.
