Diane rushed out of her room, her long hair was messily packed into a pony tail that ended at the tail of waist.
She had a class in the next five minutes, she was a final year student of an ivory league school where she was studying business management and human relations, she was one of the few students that were allowed to take on more than one major in the school because of her excellent performances in her first year.
Thus she was in her last year on Human relations while she was doing her masters on Business management already.
But because of her family background and constraints, she also had to take on two to three part time work to make up money for tuition and loans, thus she worked late into the night on most days.
Today was a presentation class and she couldn’t afford to be late, she couldn’t afford anything tainting her amazing school records because that was all she had to survive on after now.
With that thought in mind Diane ran unrelenting towards the lecture hall, her luck had always been good and she was able to enter the lecture room a minute before the time.
She heaved a sigh of relief as she looked around to find a suitable seat and was attracted by Nelly waving her hand at the other corner of the class and she moved quickly to sit beside her.
Nelly was Diane best friend, they had met at one of Diane’s part time work in her second year, Nelly was a new student then, and they had clicked off, talked for a while then separated only to find themselves in the same lecture room when Diane started her first year in Human relations.
It was a shocking and exciting experience for them as they both didn’t expect to be course mates. With her first year in Business management and her genius mind, Diane found Human relations pretty easy and didn’t hesitate to show Nelly the ropes thus strengthening their bond and although they didn’t get to be with each other every moment like other best friends because of Diane’s busy schedule, they were inseparable at heart, with each one always looking out for the other.
Like every time, Nelly had reserved a seat for Diane and she beamed as soon as she saw her, waving her hands to call her attention to her “I knew you were going to come in late.
You should really reduce your work hours” Nelly said as soon as Diane sat down beside her. She felt like Diane worked too hard for her age, she was only twenty yet she already had a degree in Business management with a gpa of about 4.7 and she was already doing her masters while she was in her final year for her second degree, that alone was enough feat as it is, but she still had to work for about six to eight hours daily.
There was really no rest time for her at all. “Its fine Nell, I just had to step in for someone, besides, I couldn’t resist the extra money. I need it as it is” she said with a soft gentle smile.
Nelly wanted to argue but the class began at that moment so she kept quiet, then brought out a bag of snacks and water that she passed to Diane “I knew you wouldn’t get breakfast” she whispered smiling cheekily while Diane also smiled back at her.
Nelly was such a life saver to her, she couldn’t imagine how it would have been if she didn’t have Nelly, she assisted her with food, writing out assignment or even typing it when Diane was at work, all Diane had to do was help her with the solutions as she worked, thus saving time.
She couldn’t repay her in this lifetime she thought as she focused on the presentation that was going on, because she knew she was short on time, Diane never missed classes if she could avoid it because the explanation from these professors and lectures was what she really lived by, she will only put aside about an hour or two for revision every day before she went to bed to master the topic and that was all.
Her brain was like a supercomputer, which was why was able to do so much at the same time, the class was an individual presentation of a mini project topic they had been given on this course asides from their usual final project.
It was soon Diane’s time, the professor in charge smiled warmly at her as she climbed the podium to talk about her topic, even the whole class quietened down as she was the best student in their department and most people liked to hear her talk “good day everyone, I’m Diane and my topic is….” She went on and on and the whole class was carried along as she broke down the topic, talked about the development on it and then spoke about her ideas on it.
The whole class was quiet and it was thirty minutes past her time that the time keeper realized that he had forgotten to ring the alarm and hurried to ring the alarm scared that he would be scolded by the professor.
The whole class burst into applause for her as Diane went to her seat “you are always so amazing” Nelly said as she threw her arms on Diane her eyes shining so brightly.
From the first moment that she had seen Diane, she had felt the compelling power that she carried, although she had always dressed simply with no accessories, Diane’s beauty was one that needed no assistance.
She was always radiant and beautiful every time she saw her, with the confidence that she oozed always, Nelly felt like Diane was a really special person every time she saw her, she only pitied her when she saw her work so hard every time.
“Thank you Nell, it will be your turn soon, arrange your emotions” she told her as she removed her hands that were wrapped around her neck like an octopus.
Nelly was like a child sometimes even though she was older than Diane by a year, perhaps because she had led a sheltered life, her thoughts were really simple and sometimes childlike when they had just met and although, she was more grown now, she was not much different from before, only shedding her childlike thoughts and behavior.
After Diane’s reminder, Nelly sat down properly and went over her presentation, luckily her presentation was one of the last ones and since there weren’t a lot of students, the professor wasn’t tired out yet.
Nelly’s presentation went well and the professor nodded approvingly at her after she was done and the class applauded as she went to her seat. Diane was so happy as she watched her come sit down beside “well done Nell, you have done well” she said, her eyes curving up as she smiled happily.
She had been worried that Nelly would not do it well, as Nelly was always afraid of going on stage when she had just met her, it had taken a lot of efforts to make her feel comfortable to face crowds or go on stage, but she had been extra worried that Nelly will feel less confident because of her performance, which was why she had told her to gather her emotions earlier, but seeing as Nelly did so well, she was really happy.
The class ended after two more presentations, and the professor commended all of them saying they were all grown now and could compare with professionals even he had added jokingly and left the class happy.
Diane had another class immediately in her master’s course, this was one of the reasons she had no friends, her entire day was full and the few time in between, she had to use it to work either part time or helping students.
She was the only best student in a department that didn’t hold tutorials, she really couldn’t afford to and her course mates understood and they only went to meet her anytime it was close to examinations.
Her next class was an analytical course, you had to understand proper interference and knowing how to put the knowledge taught into applied knowledge in everyday life, Diane was able to do just fine but it still demanded more from her than other courses. She didn’t mind though, she had never been one to shy away from challenges. Her father had ingrained that in her throughout her childhood.
After completing the classes for the day, Diane went to meet her department head who was also the one in charge of her master’s research. “Diane” the woman called her name and smiled as soon as she entered. Diane has been her favorite student from her first year and she had never disappointed her even up till now, to say she liked her was an understatement.
