“Stop storming around my library. It’s like an earthquake. I can literally feel the building shaking.” Kayen slammed the book in his hands once he couldn’t bear his brother’s mood. Since the moment Liam arrived at the library, he kept pacing back and forth furiously, venting his anger. Kayen heard his growling in a very low and deep voice.
“I can’t stand him. I swear if I could, I would make two little of him right now.” Liam finally stopped growling so he could reply to his brother, but he continued marching across the library in circles, cooling his temper.
“What did he do this time?” Kayen asked curiously. Without even asking, he knew Liam talked about the Alpha who had just arrived at the pack about two hours ago, wondering what had put Liam in such a bad mood.
“She is real. Everything they did to her back then must be real as well.” Liam blurted out without a breath, hurriedly, like those words were a poison threatening to burn his throat while saying them out loud. He was still processing the entire conversation with Dagon. Everything Dagon said echoed in his mind. Liam knew he couldn’t jump to any conclusion because their conversation ended faster than it began, but the most important information he needed, he got.
“What?” Kayen instantly jumped out of his chair, walking straight to his brother to stop him. He stopped right in front of him, eagerly getting Liam’s full attention.
“What did he say?” He demanded information as well. Liam stopped finally pacing, unwillingly, since his brother blocked the pathway, anyway. He locked his eyes with his brother, his breath shallow and loud. Liam exhaled loudly several times, taking deep breaths before he could speak once again. He needed to sort out his thoughts and properly organize the conversation in his mind before he could fully describe to Kayen everything which happened between them during the lunch.
Kayen seemed to be surprised how easily they got what they wanted without even using any magic on Dagon, but at the same time, he didn’t seem to be satisfied. Kayen’s mind worked hard to integrate the new information into everything he knew from before, focusing on what was left hidden not because of the obsession his brother had over the unknown girl but because of his private curiosity over a human girl with talent to survive in the middle of the pack of werewolves.
Kayen had his magic and people respected him thanks to his adoptive parents. He found his place among those people quite naturally but given to the brutality of Dagon’s pack, the girl should be dead for a long time dead, yet she survived and not only that, as the first known person escaped and thanks to the Liam, the girl seemed to be made of flesh instead of a pure imagination.
“You need to get more information.” He suddenly blurted out. Liam leaned his head, his eyes glued on Kayen standing in front of him, urgency written all over his face.
“If I talk to him again about her, I swear I am gonna kill him on the spot. You couldn’t see his eyes when he talked about her. He wants her. Not to punish her, but as a woman. I could see his thoughts in his eyes, not to mention the scent he had emitted when talking about her. His obsession is…” Liam searched for the correct word to describe properly what he got from Dagon during their little conversation. He got furious over Dagon’s possessiveness and threats which came out of his mouth only because of the girl. Especially the part when he reminded Liam about the pact their great-grandparents signed together to assure peace between the two biggest packs of that time.
“No. No. You can’t do that. We need to know more. There is more to her, which we still do not understand. You are telling me she keeps escaping the group of hunters and trackers who are after her while she is not even one of them? How is something like that possible? I saw her in your dreams. She can’t possibly stand against people like you.” Liam heard something unbelievable in Kayen’s voice. He admired her. Despite him not being fully convinced about her existence in the first place and still trying to figure out whether she was really made of flesh or Liam’s imagination, the moment he found out that the girl existed, he became ecstatic and extremely curious. His reaction to the realization made Liam partly uncomfortable although Kayen was his older brother and, in general, he wasn’t a treat for the girl.
Liam felt a special connection with the girl and deep inside, he always believed she was real while having doubts in his mind as well but the strange curiousness coming from people knowing about her not only puzzled him but irritated him to the core of his mind.
Liam watched his brother, utterly focused on his thoughts, mumbling to himself what Liam should ask Dagon to get more information about the girl. As the previous conversation with Dagon played in his mind, Liam directly took half of the questions which Kayen wanted him to ask out of the table.
Dagon was already obsessed with the girls and, from replaying the conversation, he knew Dagon had tried to play it safe as well, pretending she wasn’t anyone special. Liam wondered whether he subconsciously disclosed his interest to Dagon as well. That would actually explain why Dagon became so worked up out of the blue.
“First of all, if we show excessive interest in her, Dagon will be cautious and most likely leave people patrolling around my territory. I don’t need that. Based on his words, she is slowly heading up to the north and eventually she should end up in my territory. We just need to make sure they won’t catch her on the way here.” Liam finally calmed down, his strategic and logical thinking taking over his mind. With his mood finally under control and Fenris containing his nerves as well, Liam couldn’t start processing his next steps, creating the plan to not only deal with Dagon, but as well protect the girl.
“Did he say when?” Kayen wanted to know. His interest in the girl felt different to Liam compared to the interest he had himself. He also understood Kayen wouldn’t hurt her, especially if Liam was right, and they shared some sort of connection. Maybe she was his mate. At least Liam hoped for that. He waited for the right one for a very long time and when he saw her in his dreams, he felt a strong attraction and urge to touch her, protect her, claim her.
Liam was about to answer, when Abby suddenly interrupted the flow of his thoughts, opening the mind-link between them. Kayen noticed Liam’s sudden freeze, knowing exactly what that meant.
“They are leaving.” Liam uttered and although he felt strong relief from Dagon finally getting out of his home, out of his territory, he felt a strong urge to stop him. His abrupt decision to leave Liam’s pack couldn’t mean anything good.
“You must stop him.” Kayen urged him. Liam fought his inner battle, trying to decide about what exactly he should do. If Dagon wanted to leave, he would not share any more information about the girl. Whatever he sensed during the conversation changed his mind about staying until tomorrow.
“It’s better to let him go.” Liam sharply replied. Kayen wanted to argue with him, but Liam stopped him from saying anything.
“The same as I felt his intentions regarding the girl, he must have sensed my interest in her as well. He wants her for himself and as I told you, his obsession is different, darker and twisted compared to yours or mine. He is leaving because he doesn’t want to share anything about her and probably understands that the moment she gets to our territory, we won’t give her to him.” Liam properly explained to him the way Dagon might think. Kayen brooded over Liam’s words, but he couldn’t find any flaw in Liam’s logic. What Liam said sounded solid.
Liam froze for a second once again, instructing Abby about letting Dagon go with no problems or attempts to stop him. Once he finished talking to her, he focused his attention back on Kayen.
Searching for the girl seemed impossible. Dagon’s people had her scent and already had a problem catching her. Liam would send his people on blind search, the same as what he did half a year ago, which seemed to be a waste of time. Kayen could usually use one of his tracking spells but same as trackers and hunters, he needed something belonging to the person, to connect his thoughts with the person he wanted to find, searching for the energy every living creature emits in this world, but they had nothing. They didn’t know her scent, nor did they have any of her items. Liam’s hands seemed to be tied and once again he began feeling helpless.
He combed his hair with his fingers, multiple times, like it could help brush Liam’s messy thoughts. Kayen knew his brother hit a dead end with his ideas, not really knowing what exactly they should do next, but one piece of unfitting puzzles finally found its place. From an imaginary ghost they were hunting until now, they confirmed the existence of the little girl Liam dreamed about for several years.
“I won’t ask you about your next steps, but if I may suggest, try to check the map. She got away from his pack and, according to what he said, she was heading north. There must be places which we could pinpoint she must cross, and I think we have quite several people suitable for a mission outside of the pack.” Kayen’s tone changed to a soothing one. Right now, he stopped being a historian interested in an unspecified supernatural species of the girl, who seemed to be stronger and smarter than werewolves, yet she wasn’t one and became an older brother who came to support his little brother with his struggle.
Liam shook his head at first, knowing he would watch into the map blindly, not really knowing which directions she chose before, and which places she stayed at, but one thing Kayen got right. They had quite several people who were not only good at hunting and tracking down the people but also trustworthy fighters. He might not track down the girl, but he can definitely track down Dagon’s people and if he finds them, then he would definitely get closer to her.
