Aarav
I go with my parents to the girl’s home. I didn’t want to go but my mom asks me to just come and see.
As we enter, a man my father’s age invites us in. I think he is her father.
As we settle in our seats, a girl came down. She has on a pink saree and some jewellery. She is beautiful.
She looks at all of us and at last her eyes stops at me.
Our eyes meet, and she averts her gaze. Soon someone tells her to serve coffee. She looks at the other girl and she shows her thumbs up.
She serves my parents, her parents then serves me, showing me her beautiful smile.
I take a sip. God it is spicy. I want to spit it out, but I look at her. She looks at me, trying to control her smile. I drink it in one go, then her father asks us to go to her room.
I will show her who I am.
When we entered her room, and I pinned her to the wall. She gasps at the sudden moment.
“Wh-what are you do-doing?” her eyes are wide.
“Why did you do that?” I ask her angrily. My throat is burning.
“What did I do? Leave me,” she says, struggling in my grip.
“I know it was you who mixed spice in my coffee,”
“Yo-you know i-it,” she stammers.
“Yes, I saw another girl signalling to you,” I let her go.
“Ok I did it but I have a reason for that,” she confesses and sits on the bed.
“Why?” I ask her. Now I am not angry with her as she has a reason for this.
“Because I thought if you drink the spicy coffee then you will think that I don’t know how to cook and you will say no to this marriage,” she says.
I laugh like a maniac.
Really? This girl thinks a spicy coffee will make me say no to this marriage.
“Stop laughing I didn’t crack a joke,” she shouts at me angrily.
“Ok I am sorry,” I say and sits beside her.
“I don’t want this marriage,” she says making me frown.
“Why?” I ask her.
“Because I am not ready for marriage. I don’t want to marry this early I have dreams I want to fulfill them before marriage,” she turns to my side.
“I also don’t want this marriage,”
“Really?” she asks happily.
“Yes, I want to have a love marriage,”
She fully turns towards me, keeping her legs on the bed while sitting in Indian style.
“So do you have a girlfriend,” she asks.
“No,” I say to her.
“What? You don’t have a girlfriend, and you want to have a love marriage? How is that possible?”
“I am waiting for my dream girl,” I say.
She starts laughing. “Haha... Seriously you believe in finding a dream girl and all,"
She is so beautiful when she laughs. She is laughing wholeheartedly, and I stare at her.
“Dude, there is no love and all in this world,” she says.
That means she doesn’t believe in love like I do. We are so opposite to each other.
“What’s your name?” she asks me.
“Don’t you know my name?” I ask, very surprised. She doesn’t even know my name.
“Do you know her name?” my subconscious asks me. ‘I too don’t know her name.’
“No, I don’t know your name,” she says.
“ I am Aarav,” I forward my hand for a handshake.
“Hi, I am Anjali,” she shakes my hand.
We hear a knock, and we turn to see her cousin standing there.
“Aunt asked you to come down,“ she says and Anjali nods.
“You are saying no to this marriage right?” she asks hopefully..
“Yes,”
“Cool, so tell your parents you don’t want this marriage and I will say the same to mine,” she says, and I nod.
“Shall we go?” she asks, and we go down.
“Here they come,” dad says looking at us.
“So young man, we fixed your marriage with Anjali,” dad says
“What?” me and Anjali asks at the same time, looking at each other.
“Yes Aarav we want this to happen marriage as soon as possible,” dad says.
I looked at mom, and she is giving me a sad smile.
Later, we bid our byes and went home.
“Dad how could you fix the marriage without asking me?”
“Aarav I have already told you I fixed your marriage with her, then why are you making it a big issue?”
“Big issue? Its my life dad and I think I have some right to make certain decisions,”
“I fixed your marriage with Anjali and that’s final,” he says, and goes to his room.
I look at mom.
“I can’t do anything Aarav,” she says and goes inside.
I went to my room. I don’t want this marriage, but what should I do?
My phone rang, it is an unknown number.
“Hello,” I answer.
“Hello Aarav,” A feminine voice says..
“Yes, who’s this?” I asked.
“Me, Anjali,”
Anjali? How did she get my number?
“How did you get my number?” I am amused.
“It’s not the matter here. I called to ask you something?”
“What?”
“Can you meet me tomorrow?“
“Why?”
“To discuss this marriage,”
“Ok,“
“Ok tomorrow at 11am at Orbit mall,”
“Ok,”
“Ok bye,” she says and the line cut.
I remember my mom’s words. She says I can find love through an arranged marriage.
Can I find love through this marriage?
