CHAPTER TWO
I glanced at my phone as it rung for the third time since I sat down. I wanted to pick it up but I could not bring myself to talk to Lucian, not after what Norman had just confided in me. I turned the volume down before returning my attention to the ash-haired boy sitting across me in the booth.
“What?” I muttered in a soft, surprised tone.
“Mr. Black clearly has nothing to do with the deadly trio as you called them but he is definitely having an affair. The woman’s name is Caroline Heathers and as you may have already guessed, she is a were-dragon,” He explained again.
“But you can’t be so sure,”
“My father has a friend from Firecave. He is a cop too and he sent him an actual video of Mr. Black with the woman in a restaurant in Firecave town, making out. I’ll send you the clip,” he fished out his phone, keying in his password.
“Lucian is going to be so heartbroken,” I muttered softly as Norman sent me the clip and sure enough, it was exactly what he’d described. How was I supposed to face Lucian now?
“I know,” Norman sighed.
“You cannot tell anyone else about this, not even Angel,” I warned.
“Its not my story to tell. So I’ll se you tomorrow at school,” He rose up, walking away, leaving me palpitated by the shock of the new revelation. We were finally in a good place and despite my now official half demon, werewolf thing going on, Lucian and I were finally happy. Greta was already out town, we knew James was the other man and I had no demons coming after me. Even Ronald seemed to have gone AWOL just like the new Principal.
“Hey,” I looked up, a bit startled as Leon sat down across me.
“Hey,”
“I need someone to talk to,” He said quietly.
“Is everything okay?” I had a pretty good idea why he looked like a rained cat right now but I still played dumb, like I had no freaking idea of what was going on.
“I mean, I don’t know. Look, I’ll be meeting Blessing here in ten minutes because I want to break up with her and I’m kind of freaked about it,”
“What? But why?”
“Peggy kissed me yesterday and maybe it’s a long shot but I think she likes me back. I want to officially ask her out instead of leading Blessing on for no reason. I mean, I thought I’d be the one to kiss Peggy first but she f*****g kissed me, Faith,” a small smile tagged his lips. Hearts were going to get broken here.
“So you want to break up with a girl that loves you so much just because the girl you’ve been crushing on kissed you? Did Peggy even mention anything about liking you?” Damn Peggy for putting me in the middle of this situation.
“Not yet but with time-“
“There is nothing called with time, Leon. You are my best friend and I hate to break it to you but she doesn’t like you the way you think she does. She is Tae’s mate,” I pointed out.
“Tae hurt her and she hates him for it,”
“Initially, yes but mates will always be mates. There is something about that bond that always pulls them towards each other. She may pretend to hate him from time to time but she always goes back to him. He didn’t even actually cheat on her, remember? Look, the thing about our mates, is that no matter where we run to or who we run to, we’ll always find our way back to them. Don’t break up with such a beautiful, smart girl that loves you, just because Peggy kissed you,” I breathed out. His gray eyes darkened with emotion and somehow, I knew he knew what I said was actually true.
“Why couldn’t I have been her mate, huh? I would have been better than those two douchebags she dated. I would have never hurt her like they did. I would have protected her from all that pain they’ve caused her,” He stated in a soft embittered tone.
I reached over, grabbing his palms as our gazes met,” Trust me, I know that more than anyone. However, fate is cruel sometimes, Leon but it is what it is and we can do nothing to change it. But if you really think your relationship with Blessing is leading to nowhere then maybe its time you actually came clean to her. Its no use being with someone you don’t love,” I said.
“You are right,” he exhaled.
“Hey guys,” Blessing chirped as she walked over to us. She looked pretty in a low-necked camisole with a pair of washed-out blue jeans.
“Hey,” I chorused.
She then dipped down, placing a subtle kiss on Leon’s lips. Leon looked at me, like he was seeking permission of something and I instantly understood, making a soft nod towards him in response. He had to do it now and not keep on evading the truth of the harsh reality.
“We need to talk,” Leon said, finally looking at Blessing.
“I’ll leave you guys to it,” I stood up, taking that as my cue to leave.
As I walked away from the diner, I placed a call to Lucian and he was quick to pick up on the first ring, almost as if he had been waiting for my call.
“Red,” God! I loved the deep sound of his voice.
“I’m sorry I couldn’t pick up earlier but do you think you are in the mood for a short ride out of town in your bike?” I poised.
“Where are you? I’ll pick you up,” he said.
“In front of the Woodcave Grocery Store,” I said, glancing at the plaque containing the name of the grocery store.
“Good. I’ll be there in ten,”
“See you then Bub,” I smiled.
Maybe it had hit me that every spare moment I happen to have, I needed to spend it with the boy I loved. My life was way too unpredictable to spend time away from my boyfriend. Making memories of us was what I both needed and wanted. As I sat on the bench in front of the Grocery store, all I could do was replay the memories of us.
“Waiting for someone?”
“Ian. W-What are you doing here?” I questioned, tagging back a strand of hair in the back of my ear. What struck me almost immediately was how he had bags under his eyes, his entire silhouette looking tired and not to mention he had a tiny stubble on his chin. Usually, his hair would be neat but it was looking pretty messy even though that still was a good look on him.
“To grab some groceries,” he smiled but then grew serious,” I know I said, I’ll be keeping my distance from you but um…my birthday is coming up and I have really got no friends with me. So if you ever happened to have a chance maybe then, I would be glad to have you as my audience,”
“I’m not sure that is going to happen but I’ll keep that in mind,” I answered.
He nodded before walking into the grocery store. I felt sorry for him but the last thing I needed was to jeopardize my relationship over an old flame.
“Red,” Lucian called as he came to a stop in front of the grocery store.
A smile spread across my lips as he strode over towards me, dressed in all leather. Was it possible for him to look any more handsome? He leaned down as though to kiss me but instead swept me off my seat, making a surprised giggle leave my lips. His lips pressed against mine subtly as he carried me to the bike, making sure I was sitting in position. Taking a helmet, he put it over my head then stopped to stare at me in the eyes.
“What?” I questioned.
“How did I get so lucky?” He questioned, his voice soft and filled with adoration.
“You and me both,” I whispered.
“Jesus! Get a room,” Ian shouted as he exited the store.
We both laughed as he walked away. Lucian got on the bike, put his own helmet in place while held his midsection tight. The last thing I wanted was to fly out of my seat mid-way through the road.
“You remember the first time we rode together?” He questioned.
“Yeah. We were going to the station to get Leon and Alec after they got arrested for fighting. I actually could not stand you then and look at me now, unable to stand being away from you,” I chuckled as he started the engine.
“I can’t stand being away from you either,” he said.
As he flew across town, I didn’t feel afraid as that first time. Maybe because I had this feeling that Lucian would never let me get hurt and it felt so damn good to have that one person in my life that I could trust with my own life.
“You want to do something crazy?” He shouted above the whirring of the wind.
“Yeah. What are we doing?” I shouted back.
“Lets have this day to ourselves. No family, no friends, phones off and just the two of us. We can do all sort of things together, get fake IDs to get in clubs and go skinny dipping,”
“We can even spend the night in a motel,” I added, feeling the rush of the idea, already building inside me.
“Your mother will kill you for that,”
“I know,” I said.
