CHAPTER 9
Miles was having a wonderful time singing with Laurie. They played patty cake and danced around like ballerinas, then sang lots of songs, and Laurie never once cringed, or covered her ears like everyone else did whenever Miles sang. It was his greatest shame.
He was a siren and singing was what they did. It was the family business. But he sang like a toad with a frog caught in its throat, and the frog had bronchitis. All the others back home teased him incessantly and always made him feel like he was nothing or useless. Only his dads had ever suffered through his singing and that was only because they were his dads and they were obligated to. All the humiliation and bullying was the main reason he had run away.
