A thin sweat smeared on his forehead, his heart dancing to the rhythm of the indian ceremonial drums. Zander had never had a reaction to a woman or a girl the way this red head was making him feel. His wolf had been pacing and howling since he smelt lilac scent causing him a headache. Had he felt sparks coming from their touch, he would have been sure that she was his mate. When he touched her all he wanted was to embrace her and never let her go which was confusing to him and to his wolf Zane.
“Zander, something is wrong,” Zane his wolf had told him.
“What’s the matter?”
“I feel this incredible pull towards her, I can tell she is a werewolf but I cannot communicate with her wolf. She seems dormant and deeply suppressed as if by magic.”
“Do you think she is our mate?”
“I do not know she can’t be. The attraction and protectiveness I feel towards her feel like she would be but the odds of her belonging to us are quite high.”
“What is she to us? Are we meant to be her guardian, she is the royal princess after all,” Zander contemplated causing Zane to smirk.
“You are many things human but stupid is not one of them. I would have recognized my master or mistress instantly and sealed our life to hers in a blood bond,” Zane continued while pacing in Zander’s mind.
“Stop that pacing, it’s causing me a headache,” Zander said aloud in a bid to rebuke his wolf only to meet the surprised stares of Jessica and Tory - the pack’s sluts.
He stood from where he had been sitting to try to make sense of the sudden restlessness he felt immediately he saw the girl the emperor brought from the third realm. The long lost princess and heir to the throne of Grundolf kingdom, ignoring the advances of Jessica. He heard them giggle behind him but paid them no mind, he had only one girl in his mind who made him want to unravel the mystery of her existence and deep connection to him.
He had taken to spending the night below her window along with Mizpah who had also taken a liking to her. Mizpah stood guard from the moment she was brought in refusing to budge even for an inch. When she woke up both Mizpah and Zander had been relieved but as soon as she saw Mizpah, she had gone into a frenzy, running out of her room half-naked. Zander’s position under her window allowed him to be privy to the on-goings in her room, he tried to convince himself that he was there just to protect their princess but in all honesty he too had no idea why he was standing guard and afraid of anything bad happening to her.
He had run from his hiding place and into the castle to comfort the girl but as soon as he came face to face with her, no words could form in his mind. Amazingly, his wolf had been as dumbstruck as he was making him wonder why she had such an effect on them. He loved her feisty nature but when she struck him on his shins, he had been unprepared. She could really kick like a mule; Zander had to hold in the pain-induced whimper. Thankfully, Greta, the oldest and most trusted royal servant had barged in cutting their unpleasant first encounter. When she left he felt empty all of a sudden, his wolf whimpered and retreated to the back of his mind where he sulked the whole day and refused to talk to him.
He had gone back to Mizpah’s side as he felt only the beast would understand what he was going through trying to make sense of what was happening to him. Mizpah looked as forlorn as he did; he stroked his neck and side while talking to him.
“Hey there buddy,” Zander leaned his head on the beast’s neck.
Mizpah let out a low growl.
“Yes, me too buddy, I do not understand why she has this effect on me yet she is not my mate,” Zander said as he continued stroking Mizpah’s neck.
When Mizpah heard what he said, he moved his body to face zander and let out an earth-shattering growl. The beast’s reaction indicated agitation because of what zander had just said, he seemed to disagree with him.
His loud growl did nothing to frighten zander even though Mizpah intimidated those that were within their vicinity causing them to scatter immediately because they feared for their lives. Zander was the only other person who could come near Mizpah without a fear of being torn to pieces. This was something that intrigued because it took him several spells to calm Mizpah before he could be able to command or ride him. Zander and the beast had developed a bond though it was odd because it had not chosen him as its master. It followed him everywhere he went, making the people respect and fear him because they believed that he was the chosen one who would unite and reign over all the seven realms bringing peace and unity between species.
“She cannot be, I would have felt the sparks,” Zander tried to convince Mizpah.
He made a loud growl, circled Zander, and then went to peep at the window looking for Maya. She had left for breakfast with the emperor so when Mizpah started to growl while wanting to break the windowsill, Zander immediately understood that the girl was probably in danger. He did not wait to hear from others whether the princess was okay or if she was in danger. He sprung to his feet running in the direction of the royal main dining hall. He was just about to convince himself that the princess was a grown up and would take care of herself especially when he remembered how tough her kick was.
When he got to the main royal dining hall, his eyes almost budged out of their sockets. The princess’ eye sockets were completely white and the emperor was struggling to breathe. The emperor had a tight knot on his throat that restricted the flow of air, causing him to turn blue while trying to unclasp the invisible grip that had him at the death’s door. Jared his personal servant was trying everything he could to make his master live one more day. Chadron the ruthless vampire king had also taken to his heels followed by Damon, immediately the girl started to harness her magical power.
Greta stood with her mouth wide open, her hands in a bid to attempt to block it. Two guards were lying on the floor and a wind started to blow gently at first but it got furious within seconds. It seemed to elevate the girl from where she was standing almost a foot of the ground. Zander’s anxiety and fear for the safety of the girl before him rooted him to one spot unable to do a thing. It was then that Zane his wolf shouted though their link.
“Go to her human, we seem to have a connection with her that may just work to calm her down. Just hold her, give me full control, and leave the rest to me.”
“Are you trying to get us killed, just look at her, her magic is too strong and unbalanced,” Zander tried arguing with his wolf.
“Trust me Zander, something tells me if we don’t try and calm her down, not only will we be in danger including her but she may upset the balance of all the seven realms. DO IT NOW!”
Zander did not need to hear anymore, if it meant his sacrifice would save the seven realms so be it. As he was rushing towards Maya, he gave Zane all the control. When they were almost near her, the wind that was blowing started to fight against them. He pushed but the wind seemed to push harder causing him to slide right back where he had been standing. He tried several times to reach Maya but the wind acted as a protective barrier that prevented anyone from reaching where she stood elevated. Slowly she started to move higher, Zander panicked thinking she would be out of reach.
His magic was not as strong as hers was and his element was earth and fire not air. His magic was also not strong enough to hold out against Maya’s; this was completely a suicide mission for him. His panic caused him to use more force to try and penetrate the wind barrier that was pushing him back but he was surprised to be thrown right back from where he had started with the same intensity.
“Calm down, just try and calm down,” a voice said to Zander, it was too low that he thought he had imagined it.
“Is that you Zane?” Zander asked his wolf.
“No, I thought I heard something as well but it was too far off I thought I imagined it.
“Calm down, it’s the only way you will be able to penetrate the barrier,” the voice spoke again but a bit louder this time catching Zane and Zander in surprise.
“Who are you?” they both asked almost at the same time, pausing in midstride as they were getting ready to try again to penetrate the invisible wall created by the wind.
“Not now though I am a part of you, we will discuss this later. For now you need to focus on my voice and I’ll lead you to peace and calm,” the voice continued.
As Zane perked his ears to listen, a sense of calm enveloped him from the paws up towards his body while Zander thought he could feel his legs start to tingle with a warmth that gave him a sense of calm.
“How is this possible?” Zander thought but the voice in his head spoke.
“There are many things you are yet to discover about us but it’s not yet time. Focus on now!”
“Us?” both Zander and Zane asked at the same time only to realize that they were now before Maya.
Zane hugged her and released his calm on her while Zander watched from the back of his mind.
“Khira, ndaguthaitha horera... Khira” Zane was calling out to Maya in the ancient native language spoken by the wolves of old.
Zane continued trying to reach out to her hoping that she would hear his calls and come back. The more he tried; even without him noticing the wind started to calm down bit by bit until finally, she closed her eyes and collapsed on the floor. Zane gave Zander control; he picked her up bridal style and looked at Greta to lead the way to her chambers away from the cause of her distress.
Zander was wary of the emperor since the day Luna Samara died; she was the only person who had been brave enough to stand against Casper. Even his own daughter, who is believed to be living in seclusion since her daughter disappeared from Grundolf and believed to have died long time ago, never got along with her father. Something in his heart was rejoicing at the havoc caused by the girl with the red hair - his chest swelled with pride for her. As he walked the corridors of the palace with her in his arms, he swore to her that no harm should come upon her for as long as he was alive.
He looked at her innocent face and wondered how such a naïve looking ordinary girl could bring a strong and feared emperor and alpha king to his knees, with nothing but her devotion towards the woman who she believed was her grandmother. Luna Samara would have been so proud of her granddaughter. When they entered the room, he lay her on the bed and gently removed the unruly strands of hair that had found their way to her face. He envied the strands of hair the freedom they had, of feeling the silky softness of her skin. How he wished he could have such freedom, he would worship her beauty for all eternity.
“Turning mushy, aren’t we?” Zane asked.
“No, I’m just… I uh…I was…ah, I was just saying she is likable and her mate will be one lucky guy.”
“Hahaha…don’t you just wish she was ours? I would have marked her right here and now!” Zane said gruffly causing Zander to smirk.
“Touche!”
By the window, Mizpah was pacing while trying to claw his way in near his mistress. He had broken the upper windows, the lower one, his view obscured, and if this went on, he would break the wall. Zander made his way towards the beast and tried to calm him down but he would have none of that. He looked at Greta but she too was as lost as he was, then an idea popped into his mind. He knew Greta would never agree to it so he sent her on an errand to the doctor’s so that he could find a way to calm Mizpah.
As soon as she left, he picked her up from her bed gently and walked with her towards the window. At that moment, Natalia, Maya’s maid came in through the door.
“Zander what are you doing to the princess?”
Zander did not turn back to reply to Natalia but Mizpah let out a loud growl that had her running away from the chamber as fast as her legs could carry her to safety. As soon as she disappeared through the door, the beast calmed down and started to whimper - just like a huge puppy that was seeking affection from its owner.
Zander went all the way to the window, pushed the panes that opened outside pushing Mizpah away from the window. The beast seemed to understand Zander, it took a few steps away from the window, making it easier for Zander to open the window and step out onto the balcony. He lowered himself to a sitting position, making himself comfortable with Maya still held in his arms. Mizpah came silently, approaching her as though she was conscious and afraid of him. When he was two steps away from her, he paused, straightened himself arching his back and pushing his chest out, and kneeled on his two front paws with his head bowed in deep reverence towards his mistress.
At that moment, Greta rushed in to Maya’s room but she was not in bed. She scanned the room in one sweep and witnessed something that she never thought she would have the privilege of ever coming across. Sitting on the balcony was Zander with Maya on his lap, before them Mizpah was kneeling on his front legs, head bowed in obeisance to the princess. It was such a sacred, miraculous, and solemn moment that she kneeled down herself without realizing it. Tears ran freely down her cheeks but she did not care for decorum at this hour, she was witnessing an event that many would kill to witness.
Mizpah stayed in that position for close to a whole minute then stood and approached the sitting duo slowly. He came directly to where they were, lifted his huge paw towards Maya’s face. Zander panicked and thought that he would crush her face but something held him in place that he could not move. His heart was beating frantically, he had just made a promise that seemed about to be broken. He wanted to open his mouth to warn Mizpah but nothing came out of his mouth – he was rendered motionless and speechless. Mizpah used one of his sharp claws to part the hair that was Maya’s forehead and then lowered his own snout to bring it into contact with her forehead. A bluish light came from Mizpah into Maya’s forehead, she sighed and mumbled incoherently then heaved and went back to sleep. In a moment the magical moment between master and subject was over and Mizpah calmed down and sat on the ground.
Zander stood, his mobility returned to him, taking her back to her bed. He lay her down gently once again and without thinking found himself kissing her on the forehead. Greta coughed, making Zander aware of her presence, and to warn him to subtly to watch his manners. He smirked and straightened himself up.
“Please let me know when she wakes, I will be on my way if you will excuse me”
“Okay” did all Greta say, not willing to speak her mind.
He left her room feeling so happy and walking with a lighter step than he had in ages. His wolf did not give him a moment’s rest but kept taunting him that the red head had smitten him. Zander was not sure but all he knew was that she made him feel alive.
