First thing the next morning, as soon as she’d dropped off Felix, she drove to the Jupiter Point Police Department. Before she could lose her nerve, she strode to the front desk, where a sergeant in uniform was fielding calls and logging in visitors. She stared at the signup sheet, wondering how strict they were about names. “I was hoping to talk to Police Chief Becker,” she told the sergeant. He barely glanced at her. “He’s on vacation. But if you want to file a police report, I’m your man.” Her heart sank.
