Melissa’s POV
I looked at my sit at the mirror. Urghhhh of all days to get a zit, why today?? My scholarship application into Cleveland Grand University finally clicked and I'm resuming today. I picked up my tiny make up kit and brought out the new foundation aunt Carolina just got me.
I began to quickly blend it around my face to cover the zit. "Lissa!!!!, We're running late, hurry up!!" my basket mouth new bestie, Katie, yelled from the living room downstairs.
Katie and I had clicked the moment we met for the first time a week ago. I and my aunt Caroline just moved to Ontario, Canada from Los Angeles so as to pursue my scholarship. On getting to our new house at Grimsely hills, our new neighbors turned out to be Katie and her family.
They welcomed us warmly and decided to help us adapt to the new environment. It was during my conversation with Katie she told me she had just resumed at the same school. I told her about my scholarship and she offered to help me find my way in, out and around the school.
"I'm coming!!" I yelled back at her as I hurriedly applied lip gloss, picked up my bag and rushed downstairs.
"And where do you both think you're going without saying goodbye to me?" Aunt Caroline smiled as she handed us our lunch.
"Thank you so much,Bye aunt Caroline!!" We both chorused as we rushed out the door. "Have a nice day!" We could hear aunt Caroline shout to us.
"You've made us late" Katie said with a grin. "I'm sorry, I barely had enough time to pack all the new books I got yesterday" I said apologetically as we boarded the cab.
Finally we got to the school. I suddenly felt butterflies in my stomach. I had never been in such a large building before. The school was massive and beautifully decorated. There were statues and fountains here and there.
Thousands of students moved about. Some in groups of threes, fours or a whole pack of twelve, while others could be seen walking alone or with a partner. Katie seemed to have noticed my nervousness as she gave me a sudden jerk back into reality.
"You don't have to worry about anything. I promise you'll love it here and you've got me obviously I'm the star here" we both laughed as she took me to the school dashboard where I could find my name and class schedules. "Oh splendid!!, We have the same lectures and schedules throughout the week" her loud British accent echoed in my ears.
"Owww,, yeah that's great but try to keep it down, you have a microphone in your throat" I grinned at her. We walked down the hallway and Katie wouldn't stop showing me people and explaining different charts and statues to me.
Finally we got to our lecture hall. We could hear the lecturer and a few chatters in the hall.
"PHYSIOLOGY 121,HALL 146d". Katie glanced at me. "Take a deep breath" she whispered before flinging the door wide open. Everywhere had gone silent. Everyone's attention was turned to us. Katie grabbed my hand and walked boldly into the hall.
I could feel everyone's gaze on us until we found two seats to settle at the very back of the hall. We were still trying to settle in when three lavishly dressed girls stopped at our desk. I looked up to the dirtiest stares I had ever received.
" You can't sit here bitches" the girl in the middle said rudely. She was chewing a gum and looked like the main chick among the three. "Ignore them" Katie whispered in my ears. "Are you both deaf? This school is turning into a trash site, they let almost any trash in nowadays. You can't seat here you morons, Go find somewhere else!!"
Not wanting any troubles on my first day, I quickly stood up and attempted to walk away to another seat but Katie pulled me down almost immediately. " We are going no f*****g where mate, yo pops ain't own this place, so scoot yo dry ass outta here" she said in the sassiest voice I had ever heard her use.
The whole class burst into a bowl of laughter. The girls looked at their selves in uttermost shock. The middle girl was about to retort angrily when we heard the lecturer talk through the microphone "that's enough girls".
The the middle girl glanced at us dangerous before spitting her chewing gum into my hair. "You both just earned yourselves a whole band of enemies, you'll regret messing with us" she hissed as she walked away.
" This is what I was trying to avoid Katie, now I got rich spoilt brats as enemies on my first day at school" "oh stop it Lissa, ya keep acting like a novice. I told ya I gat ya ain't nothing gon' harm ya trust me" again with her soft British accent.
I heaved a sigh before noticing that everyone avoided the last four seats, two of which we were sitting on, some people even had their own personal foldable seats while others stood. The seats must be really important if people would rather stand than sit on them. I heaved another sigh. Before deciding to pay attention to the lecturer.
About three hours later, the lecturer ends the class and calls the attendance.
" Miss Katherine Timbers?"
"Present" she replies giving me a wink.
"Miss Melissa O'Neill?"
"Present" I answer shyly
"Oh dear, you must be the scholarship student", the lecturer looked at me with pity in her eyes as I nodded
"That's wonderful, I'm Mrs Emma Corinth I'd like to see you after school okay" I nodded looking confused while she proceeded.
"Master Carlson Parkway?" There was no response. She paused and looked around the hall vividly "Are the they present?" "No", the entire class chorused. Mrs Emma shakes her head and continues with the attendance.
"I looked at Katie. Who are 'they'?" "I dunno girl, I've been here for only a month remember? She asks that all the time, along with other lecturers, the replies are always 'No'" "oh" I wondered who the lecturers always asked of.
"Lecture dismissed" Mrs Emma echoed and all the students hurriedly left the hall.
We picked up our bags and walked out of the hall.
"So what's next?" I asked Katie as we walked down the hallway. "That's all for today ma'am, now we eat" she said excitedly as she pulled me to what seemed like a highly organized cafeteria. " I want one of everything miss" Katie said pointing at all the food. "Uhmm Katie, my aunt packed lunch for us remember? Isn't one of everything here too much?" I asked her. "Nope, it's just right" she smiled childishly.
Katie carried the largest tray of food and we sat at a very fancy looking table. We began talking as we ate. Just then Katie spotted the mean girls coming our way again, this time they were about seven. They came to stop at our table again.
" What is with you both and sitting on people's positions huhn???? Get lost !!" Still the middle girl shouted at us. I could swear she looked familiar, they all looked familiar. Katie stood up and stared right at her face. "Your voice is really sting do you know that?, We're not leaving here and that's final. So you get lost" an argument broke between Katie and the middle girl.
Suddenly they stopped talking and began to walk away. Katie sat down, wiped the swear on her forehead and continued to eat. The middle girl stopped and turned around and walked towards us again, Katie tried to stand up again but I held her down.
The girl stopped in front of our table and smiled. "Leave us alone please" I said just before I felt a trail of warm liquid dripping from my head down to my white shirt. She had emptied her cup of latte on me. Everyone in the cafeteria burst into laughter along with her.
"I'll make your lives a living hell here, trust me, you'll wish you never got that scholarship you poverty stricken retches" then she walked away. Katie stared at my with her mouth wide open. Tears rolled down my eyes as I couldn't help being so embarrassed. I covered my face in shame. This was not how I wanted my first day to go★★★★★
