Our Complicated Heritage

Chapter 8 - Our complicated History How just how did I not know so much about myself and my heritage. I sit here in Isabelle’s huge kitchen eating her beautiful pancakes faced with an unknown future that I could never have dreamed to be a possibility let alone my reality.  “What has gotten you so distracted baby girl?” Isabelle questions pulling me away from my thoughts. “Nothing, just thinking.” I mumble before finishing the remains of my breakfast. “Obviously nothing, if it distracts you from eating.” She returns. “I just need some time to process everything you’ve told me; you have completely uprooted my past and future from me and I can’t just go with it, like nothing.” I explain trying to keep my anger in check, last thing I want is another punishment for my behaviour. “How about I draw you a bath so you can relax and have some alone time?” “Can you sit in there with me but not try and make me talk just relax or something, please?” I question quietly, I hate that feeling I get when she isn’t around and then I focus on that and I can’t think. So, it would be redundant. All of this is so complicated and I still don’t know the full story. “Sure, anything for you baby girl, but after we will have to finish our conversation. You need to know everything before the council comes tomorrow.” She whispers in my ear while picking me up bridal style. “Hey, hey, I can walk myself” I grumble while trying to get down. “I know but I just want to hold my baby” she reply’s while pulling me tightly into her. I can’t help but moan from her warmth. Once we get upstairs, she places me onto our bed before running to the bath room and filling up the tub. When I attempt to stand up, Isabelle warns me not to move that I am to wait for her. Argh, like why can’t I just do one little thing for myself. Fucken hell. “I am not fragile” I mumble out of frustration before attempting to ignore her orders only to have her appear in front of me scaring me to death. “I hope you weren’t just trying to ignore my orders” she says while forcing me to sit back down. “Nope, I just needed to stretch is all” I lie while shaking my head. “Now we are lying wow baby girl you just love being in trouble.” She growls before ripping my clothes off. Her eyes fill with red causing fear to course through my body, I quickly back away from her only for her to grab my ankle and pull me back to her. “Please n-” I try to plead but get cut off by her hand cutting off my air supply. “Feel that! Your breath running out because of my hand around your throat. Your tiny fingers scratching at my hands and arms. Attempting to fight against them. But ultimately failing to succeed because you are fragile and weak, compare to me and our world. I am your mate, and other half, I will stand by your side for all time protecting and loving you with all my might. Very soon you will complete your rites and accept your fate to become one of the most powerful vampires alongside me. This will be when you shed your weak and fragile side forever. But no matter what you will always be my baby girl and sub and I your Dom. Inside this house you follow my rules. Outside we rule this kingdom together.” Isabelle lectures before finally releasing me from her stronghold, I drop back onto the bed with a thump. My hand reaches up to my throat as I try to catch my breath, rubbing at the bruise that is about to form. I can’t bring myself to move or take my eyes off Isabelle’s blood red ones. “Stay here, I shall check on the tub” she orders before walking away, like nothing has happened. This time I listen to her and don’t move a muscle until she returns. She picks me up without a word before bring me into the bathroom and places me in the tub while she gets undressed to join me. I stay frozen in place as she washes me. What the hell has my life turned into? I always thought I would have a boring life, not rule a kingdom. If I am linked to such a strong blood line, how do I not know about it? Does my mum know? If she did, it means she has been lying to me, my whole life. I just let out a heavy sigh as a result of my thoughts. “Shh, it’s okay baby girl. Once you know everything it will all make sense.” She whispers in my ear while pulling my body into hers. I don’t fight her; I just stay frozen. My thoughts are taking over, I am overwhelmed and all I want to do is run but I can’t. Once we start to turn into prunes, she releases the water out of the tub before lifting me out and drying me. I still haven’t uttered a single word or moved a muscle. She dresses herself and me before carrying me to the lounge room.   “Stay here baby girl, I am going to make us some tea and then I believe I owe you a history lesson.” She says before waltzing off to the kitchen. There is something about her that is just so perfect that, don’t think I could ever grasp. She almost floats along the floor and her posture is always perfect. Never a crease to be found in her clothes. I know that we always see people who we care about as perfect but I actual believe that she is perfect. But what is perfect if not what we choose it to be? Perfection after all is a human creation of what society decides is acceptable and what all individuals should be. Argh, welp that was a rant. I lose myself in those rants, especially about outside pressures from society. “Here we are” I hear coming from right next to me, scaring me half to death. “Oh, s**t, I didn’t hear you come back in.” I grumble. “One thing you won’t have to worry about once you complete your rites. Soon you will be able to hear anything for miles.” “But wouldn’t that become over whelming and stressful?” I question with a frown. “The first few weeks, can be quite difficult but you will learn, and before you know it you will forget what it was like to be simply human.” She explains while pouring the tea out of the teapot into the cups. “Thank you for the tea.” I mumble while stuck in my head, waiting to hear what my destiny holds. “Shall we take part in our history lesson?” she questions while dropping some sugar cubes in our teas. It almost feels like we are in England or a fancy tea place, not well… I still don’t know exactly where we live but somewhere in the Australian outback I suppose. “Um, Yes please.” I reply. “Our family’s bloodlines are as old as time and if it wasn’t for the great war, you would’ve been raised by your family from that time but unfortunately, many good and bad were lost during those times. You see, the supernatural world had a civil war, ‘the great war’ but it wasn’t ‘great’ at all, it nearly took apart our world leaving only shreds.” She says but I can see sorrow in her eyes. I couldn’t imagine the pain. “Were you alive during this war?” “Mm, yes, I was. But your story starts before the war and is one of the reasons the war started. You see your great great great great grandfather, Nathaniel Sparrow was mated to my mother, Frances Harwood, together they were meant to rule the kingdom, uniting the broken kingdom. For all of time there were six royal bloodlines, these families were the originals of the vampire community. It is said that a hidden watering hole in the middle of the Australian outback turned blood red, while they were swimming to cool off from the scorching heat. Once the water had turned blood red, they decided that they needed to find the source and of course, they weren’t unable to it. Just as they were set to leave, the water turned hot, a natural spring they assumed. A storm, came out of nowhere, lighting up the night sky, one stray lightning bolt struck the blood water, electrifying it. Although this should have killed them, they awoke the next morning to find the water whole empty and that they had undergone an unearthly change.” she says, blowing my mind. “This doesn’t sound like reality; it is more of a fictional story” I remark. “That is why the rest of the world has, rather forgotten our existence. The remanence of our world is sought after by humans in their novels and tv.” She states before pouring herself some more tea. “So, what happened to our ancestors? Also, if this happened so long ago, how were they here in Australia?” I ask. “Ah, yes. Sorry about that there is so much you need to know and its hard to find the best way to tell it, without confusing you. Well to answer your question, the elder vampires were a part of a tribe who lived aside the indigenous people. They were wiped out by the elders during there new born stage of uncontrollable thirst, before they were able to understand control. They are now the remanence of a lost culture.” she explains. I am frozen in response, like wow and how. “The six royal bloodlines each took turns to rule and protect the vampire community, never had any of them crossed bloodlines as it had been forbidden by the original six. I must point out that the original six, known as the elders still live and make up the council but it was their own descendants that ruled. The council are the only people that can step in over the king/queen. As far as anyone knows the council can not be killed. The council created rules that all individuals have to live by or they face the consequences which vary depended on the severity of the crime. The rules are as follows: -          The vampire community is to stay hidden from the human population -          All mates shall never be separated or prevented from completing the matting rituals -          The six royal families are forbidden from ever crossing bloodlines together -          All Vampire offspring are given the choice to complete their rites when they hit puberty. (note it become physically impossible to completes the rites after the human age of 35). It cannot be forced upon them, by parents or others. -          The killing of humans may not draw attention to the human population and is to be avoided unless the vampire population is discovered or endangered. -          No killing or feeding on children. -          All human to vampire transformations must be approved by the king/queen ruling at the time. -          If a vampire family wishes to take a royal family’s position, they must kill the existing royal family, including the original elder who sits in the council chair. They must announce their intentions prior to any bloodshed. -          Killing another vampire if forbidden unless prior permission is granted by the council and ruling families combined or unless a position challenge is given. Those aren’t all of them but they are the most important ones. Now, you could probably imagine the outraged felt throughout the council and the community when Nathaniel and Frances revealed that they were mates. Two of the council rules conflicted with each other and a decision had to be made on what would be done about it. This split the community, some believed that the rules should be followed and they should be prevented from mating but others believe that fate was to be left alone. Needless to say, the council and royal families decided to allow it them to follow fate and mate. The Sparrow family, your family was next in line to take the throne about 100 years after Nathaniel and Frances completed their mating rituals. They made the community nervous as they had become the strongest vampires to live even stronger than the elders, what would their children be like? The civil war was led by the Hornebolt family, another one of the six families, they believed that Nathaniel and Frances were an abominations and that they had to be wiped out of existence. They used the fear of the unknown in the community to further the disarray that was already there due their mating.” She signs before quickly standing up. My jaw dropped to the floor at the start of this history lesson, now it seems to be glued there. “I have no words” I spit out. “It’s a lot, I know but its our history.” “What happened to Nathaniel and Frances and how do we come into play?” I question, wanting to know more. “The Hornebolt family, went against the council and their rules, killing countless vampire and humans alike, while creating newborns. Nathaniel and Frances went after them to kill them for the bloodshed and destruction caused. Nathaniel and Frances, tracked the Hornebolt family (there was a total 20 Hornebolts) down to around where Canberra, now stands. Nathaniel and Frances offered them the option to either face the council or to fight for their freedom. The fight lasted 7 days and ended with almost all the Hornebolt family killed but on the last day, the fight took a turn and your grandfather was injured and taken by the only two remaining Hornebolts, they disappeared off the face of the earth. Many theories existed as to what happened but none ever led to the truth. My mother was devastated at the loss of her mate, and went a little crazy. She conceived me due to a mistake with my father, whom she killed afterwards. Well after it was discovered that he was in league with the remaining Hornebolt family. It was through my father that she was told of his death. The news of your grandfather’s death killed my mother, she couldn’t cope with the loss of a mate. Her body shut down over night. You see once mated we need our mates to live, confirming the council’s worst fears.” She says before I see her break down into tears. After watching her break down for almost an hour, I finally have the power to move to her, providing support. I wasn’t able to find the strength to understand this, let alone help her. I can feel her sorrow and anger, just as if it was my own. I think I may need a real drink before I find out the rest.    Did you expect that? We know one half of the story but how did Ella’s great great great great grandfather continue the bloodline if he was a prisoner before he was killed?
