The other people in the room sat down to catch their breath.
The man holding the ax now stood up, staring coldly at Luther. He then lifted the ax toward the man in the suit. "You bastard! You killed two of my brothers. I’ll kill you for that."
“Listen to me, okay? My name is Richard. I’ve known young men like you my entire life. So, if you think I am threatened by you for even a second, you have another thing coming." Richard raised the knife in his hand. There was a fierceness in his eyes. "You know very well that was not my fault. We all agreed to find food together. I took what I needed. Your brother got greedy, and he suffered for that."
"Shut up! You’re going to die like them." The man raised the fire ax but was stopped by the man with yellow hair. He looked back at Richard and the woman beside him. He whispered, "Hold on, bro. He’s not worth it.”
His brother squinted. "Things are different now, Richard. I don't want anyone to get hurt. But you’re the reason two of my brothers are dead. It’s only fair you give us half of your food. Then I’ll let you go, no hard feelings.”
Richard looked at his bag and glanced back at the two men. After thinking for a moment, he unzipped his bag, took out some of the food, and gave them half.
Luther watched from the door. It sounded like the kitchen was one floor below them. They must have been hungry and went down to search for food. They disturbed a zombie that ended up killing two young men. That’s where Richard must have gotten the kitchen knife in his hand.
Once they finished their transaction, the man with the ax turned toward Luther. "You were the one that knocked us down when we got in here. Maybe there’s something you can give us to apologize."
He c****d his head and held up his ax threateningly.
His brother spoke up from behind him, "The girl with him looks pretty cute…"
When Constance heard him say this, her face turned red and she clenched her fist. Luther held her back and dryly replied, "She stays with me.”
Luther knew that he could kill both young men very easily now, but he was already tired and knew it would be a waste of his power to harm them.
The first man could tell that Luther was not another ordinary person. He said, "I can tell you know what you’re about, so I’ll tell you what: let’s be friends. There are zombies all over the place out there. If we are going to stick together, we need to learn to get along. I think we should split up into three groups. That way we don’t get on each other’s nerves while we’re stuck in here.”
The man pointed at the couch. “This can be your spot.” He then pointed to the bed and said, "Richard, I took some of your food today, so you earned the bed. My brother and I can take the sofa on the far wall."
Richard nodded in agreement. "Thank you very much. If we get through this, I’ll be sure to make it up to you."
The young man waved his hand. "We might not get out of here. For now, let’s just work together."
Richard nodded and went to the other side of the bed with the woman next to him.
Luther glanced at them, said no more, and sat down on his sofa. Constance followed, whispering, "Are we really going to share the same room as them?" She referred to the two brothers.
"Rest up. You’re going to need your strength." Luther sighed. He lay down on the couch, taking up two of the three cushions.
Constance frowned. "I don’t trust them."
"I know."
-----
The night was quiet, and Luther's room was so dark that only a few streams of moonlight fell from the window.
Luther was comfortable laying on the cushions, and Constance fell asleep on the arm of the couch.
The sound of a heavy snore came from the bed.
The figure of a person could be seen sitting up, then patting someone beside them. The click of a lighter echoed in the room.
Luther was too unsettled in doomsday to sleep deeply. He did not allow himself to be vulnerable now.
So, Luther woke up as the two men got up. He squinted through the darkness. In front of him was the sofa where the young men were. They lit their lighters and burned a small package.
When a sweet odor filled the air, Luther frowned. Heroine.
Luther quickly made a small cloud of water vapor in front of his nose to block the smell. He did not expect them to have drugs on them. He had only breathed in a little, and he still felt weak and fuzzy.
He couldn’t let this intoxicate him. He utilized his power to sweat out the feeling it gave him.
The two men were standing, and the blonde one approached Luther. He prepared himself for a fight, but the young man was stopped by his brother. "Don't be stupid. We need to kill the old man first. He needs to pay for killing our family."
The blonde man looked down at Constance. "Okay, we’ll do it your way. Let's kill Richard, then we can do what we want with the girl on the couch."
They both turned to face the bed, and Luther breathed a sigh of relief.
-----
The first brother leaned over Richard. He turned on the lamp next to his bed. He then tied Richard to the bedframe with a blanket.
He then picked up his ax and slashed it into Richard's leg, leaving an 8-inch gash that filled with blood. Richard screamed tried to pull himself up.
The man’s eyes flashed sternly, "Give him the antidote. I'll make him suffer as much as my brother suffered."
His brother nodded with a smirk. This did not feel cruel after every other monstrosity they had committed. To them, this was part of their lives now. There were only four brothers who depended on each other before this, and now Richard was the son of a b***h that killed two of them.
Heroine was their shared obsession, and they had an antidote for it. The blonde man opened a vial and shook it over Richard's nose. His body moved, without warning, and he let out a bone-chilling scream.
"My leg! What did you do to me?!"
"What did we do to you?! We’re only getting our revenge!" The first brother said with a twisted face as he slapped Richard in the chest. The pain from the wound made Richard's entire body tremble. There was blood in his mouth now, and the bedsheet he was on had stained a deep red.
"You said…that we were going to work together..."
"Together? You killed my brother and you want to work with us? f**k you!" He struck down on the man’s chest again.
